Winfield Cooper was the 3rd of 8 children. Winfield was born February 20, 1950, at home in Indianapolis, IN at 2444 Rader St by cousin Lizzie Mae Taylor. Winfield had a hard time coming into the world and a hard time going out.
He attended Public School 41 until the 8th grade, which he then finished his education at Manual High School. After school he joined the Army which he served for 3 years. It was not long after he returned home that he lost his eldest brother William, of which he was not the same after that loss.
Winfield met Martha Rigg and conceived 1 son, James ‘Jamie’ and 1 daughter, Tabitha from this relationship. He was very happy about this expansion of his family. Many years later, he married Geneva Frodge and from this union welcomed a son Charles “Charlie”.
Over the years, Winfield was employed at Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation. Due to his stay in the military service, he developed complications with his legs and feet which resulted in him having to ensue disability benefits.
Winfield was very talented with any musical instrument with no formal training. His skill was being able to play be ear and not needing sheet music. Later in life, Winfield was recognized as the musician for the prison ministry and completed the whole Bible study.
Winfield departed this Earth on April 15, 2026. He was preceded in death by his Mother, Cleodell Buckner; Father, Whitfield Cooper; Stepfather, Leonard Buckner; Daughter, Tabitha Cooper, and two brothers, William Cooper & Dennis Ray Buckner.
He leaves to cherish his memory sons, Jamie & Charlie, one brother Leonard Buckner, four sisters Berdia Sanders, Kathleen Buckner, Iviena Hughes and Julie Ann Buckner, 5 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of other family & friends.
A Memorial Gathering will be held at Indiana Funeral Care North, 8151 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, Indiana 46250, on May 15, 2026, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, followed by Military Honors at the same location on May 15, 2026, at 5:00 pm.
