Listen to Obituary

William Tyler Helweg, age 33, of Beech Grove, Indiana, left us on Sunday, August 31, 2025, peacefully in the comfort of his home, surrounded by the family and friends who loved him. His passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the hearts of all who had the honor of knowing him.

Born on February 17, 1992, to Robert James and Lisa Ellen (Powers) Helweg, Tyler was a cherished son, brother, and a dedicated husband. He is survived by his loving wife, Jessica Marie (Stoneking) Helweg, and their two young sons, William Thomas "Liam" Helweg and Leo James Helweg. Tyler's memory and spirit lives on through his parents and his siblings, Ryan (Seanne) Helweg, Christina (Colin) Koons, and Emma Helweg, along with a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews who he adored.

Tyler and Jess's journey began in 2010, over the Fourth of July weekend when they met at the Jellystone Park Campground in Pierceton, IN. Tyler cut Jess off during a golf cart ride to get her to stop just so he could meet her. She lived in Plainfield, IL, so they began a long-distance friendship which over the years blossomed into love. Being the romantic and sentimental guy that he was, he proposed to Jess at Jellystone Park over the Fourth of July in 2014. They married on May 6, 2017, at Turkey Run State Park and welcomed Liam in 2018 and Leo in 2022.

He lived his life as if he was born to make people laugh! Having a playful spirit and an infectious sense of humor, Tyler had a remarkable ability to bring laughter to those around him, always ready with a joke, a prank or a funny story. He could make friends with anyone, and had the ability to draw everyone together. Family meant everything to him and it was his mission to make sure nuclear and extended family kept up traditions and stayed together. He was a very thoughtful person, making a point to remember things that were important to other people. If your phone rang and it was Tyler, you knew to settle in somewhere comfortable because he'd keep you on the phone for hours.

A true lover of the great outdoors, Tyler found peace and happiness in nature. He was just six months old when his family went camping for the first time and a passion was born. Through family camping trips he learned to love camping, fishing, kayaking, backpacking, and hunting. He treasured these moments spent with family and friends. And Jess, understanding of his need to have a fishing pole in his hand and a pole in the water, let him go fishing whenever he wanted to.

He learned to love to cook from his dad, and developed his culinary skills by watching great cooks like Steven Rinella and his Meat Eater books. He loved impressing his friends and family with new dishes, and smoked and grilled meats. He was also inspired by his dad's vegetable garden and enjoyed growing and canning his own vegetables.

Nicknamed "Dr. Doolittle" at a young age, Tyler had a knack for drawing wild animals to himself, and was likewise drawn to them. He was able to catch and hold countless birds, rabbits, turtles, praying mantis, snakes, mice and more. As a young boy he dreamt of having a house filled with living creatures and his dream nearly came true. He and his family have two dogs, three cats, ball pythons, a corn snake, leopard geckos, a bearded dragon, and chameleons. If he could have added a black panther and a glass floor with exotic fish and sharks swimming below his childhood dream would be complete.

The name William means "resolute protector" and he took this to heart, guiding his decisions in life. He took pride in his role as the provider and protector of his family. The meaning of the name Tyler is "one who lays tiles" and "one who is skilled at his work". Some of his most respected qualities were his diligence and hard working nature. He often said that he wanted to live up to and honor the Helweg family name. Those were driving forces in his life. He loved his job with the City of Indianapolis and worked even when he was sick out of fear that he wouldn't be able to provide for his wife and boys.

Above all, Tyler loved his family fiercely. Jess was the light of his life, and he found fatherhood to be the greatest honor and adored his sons. His unwavering loyalty and love for his loved ones will be one of his greatest legacies, as he taught everyone he met what it meant to prioritize family and close friends above all else. His determination and fighting spirit endeared him to those around him, and his legacy will forever resonate.

Tyler Helweg’s spirit will forever illuminate the lives of those who loved him, a guiding light as they navigate the days and years ahead.

Until Then

We'll meet again when this world ends,

but until then,

I'll remember all your good years,

your bad and your lean years,

your laughter and your tears.

I'll remember how you came through it all,

standing so tall, never complaining,

because you were too tough to fall.

I'll remember how you always had time

for a friend, a smile and a helping hand.

You were a big, big-hearted man.

Yes, we'll meet again when this world ends,

but until then,

I'll remember all the funny things

you used to say and do

and all the wonderful times that we shared too.

Yes I'll remember from day to day,

and I just want to say

We'll meet again when this world ends,

but until then,

thanks for being my friend.
