William T. "Bill" Ryan, 77, of Carmel IN, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 15th, 2025 with Diann, his true love and wife of more than 50 years, by his side.
Bill was an extraordinary man. He overcame many challenges in his life, facing each one with grit and determination. He loved his family and friends beyond measure. He also loved dark beer, red wine, audiobooks, music, art, history, college sports (particularly IU basketball), the Chicago Cubs, sunsets on Siesta Key, lasagna, euchre, and Boston Cream Pie, not necessarily in that order.
Born in Binghamton, NY and raised primarily in Crown Point, IN, he was the middle son of Lillian (Javorcic) Ryan and William J. Ryan. Bill obtained a BA in history, an MA, and an MBA from Indiana University, where he formed life-long friendships and a lasting passion for IU sports. He served in the First Cavalry division of the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was proud to participate in the exhibit "Returning to the World - Vietnam Veterans' Journeys" earlier this year.
Bill and Diann met in 1973 and were married in Portage, IN in October of 1974. Bill taught at Saint Francis College in Loretto, PA for a few years and then he and Diann returned to Indiana where he obtained his MBA from IU. After graduation he spent his career in the financial industry, eventually moving to Carmel, IN where the family put down roots and has been surrounded by wonderful friends and neighbors.
Bill was liked by everyone who knew him. His quiet courage, wry sense of humor, and intelligence touched many lives. He was the perfect example of how a man can be a warrior and unbelievably tough, yet also just as loving and kind.
He is survived by his wife Diann, his daughter Emily Jervis, his grandchildren Tab (Maya), Lily, and Phil Jervis, his brothers Michael (Zofia) Ryan and Marty (Laurie) Ryan, many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and a multitude of cousins and friends. He is predeceased by his son William J. Ryan and his parents William J. and Lillian Ryan.
Contributions in memory of Bill can be made to WFYI, (317-636-2020, or www.WFYI.org), the Carmel Clay Public Library foundation (317-814-3905), and the Healthwell Foundation (www.healthwell.org). Flowers may be sent to Indiana Funeral Care - Indianapolis, in his name.
