William "Bill" Nelson

William "Bill" Nelson, 85, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 15, 2026, in Fishers, IN.

Born on April 23, 1941, in Macomb, Illinois, Bill was the son of Van and Phyllis Nelson. Bill graduated from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1964 and began a distinguished legal career in Hoopeston, Illinois, where he practiced law for more than 50 years. Throughout his career, he earned the respect and trust of his clients, colleagues, and community.

Bill married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Peterson, on October 23, 1964. Together they built a loving family and shared a lifetime of cherished memories for over 60 years.

Above all, Bill treasured his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Joyce; his son, David (Jill) Nelson of Danville, Illinois; his daughter, Julie (Marc) Korte of Fishers, Indiana; and his son, Jeff (Melissa) Nelson of Bismarck, North Dakota.

He was a proud grandfather to seven granddaughters: Ella Nelson of Indianapolis, Indiana; Olivia (El) Korte of Indianapolis, Indiana; Annie Nelson of Chicago, Illinois; Isabel Korte of Chicago, Illinois; Sophia Nelson of Bismarck, North Dakota; Adeline Nelson of Bismarck, North Dakota; and Grace Nelson of Bismarck, North Dakota. His grandchildren brought him immeasurable joy, and he took great pride in watching them grow and celebrating their accomplishments.

Outside of his legal career, Bill was an enthusiastic sports fan. He faithfully cheered on the Hoopeston Cornjerkers, the University of Illinois Fighting Illini, the Chicago Bears, St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Bulls. Whether watching a game with family or discussing the latest season, sports were one of his favorite pastimes.

Bill also appreciated life's simple pleasures. He loved sharing good food, enjoying a favorite drink, and spending time with family and friends. His warmth, wit, and generous spirit made every gathering more memorable.

Bill will be remembered for his sharp mind, steadfast character, quiet generosity, and deep devotion to his family. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched as an attorney, husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
