William "Bill" Lane Hanawalt, 84, of Defiance, Ohio, passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2026.

Bill was born and raised in Defiance, the son of Jesse and Ethel (Koch) Hanawalt. He graduated from Stryker High School, where he served as vice president of his class. On February 2, 1962, he married Linda, his wife of 64 years.

Bill began farming at the age of seven and continued for most of his life. He also sold farm equipment and worked for Tiffin Township. He was an active member of Evansport United Methodist Church. Bill was a devoted collector of arrowheads, many of which he spotted from the seat of his tractor while working the fields. In retirement, he and Linda kept an enormous garden and sold their produce from a roadside stand, a familiar stop for neighbors and passersby.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; his daughters, Shelly and Debra; his sons, Christopher and Steven; his grandchildren, Curt, Rooklyn, Olivia, Haley, and Aidan; his sister, Barbara; and his brother, Kirby.

The family will hold a celebration of life for William in Ohio, spring 2027.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Evansport United Methodist Church or NAMI of Ohio.
