W. Wilbur (Bill) Shaw Jr.
August 28th, 1945 – July 27th, 2026
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Bill Shaw, who died on July 27th at the age of 80 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Born on August 28th in Ohio, Bill was the beloved son of Wilbur Shaw and Cathleen (Boots) Stearns. Throughout his life, he was known for his kindness, integrity, and adventurous spirit.
Bill grew up at the speedway on Gasoline Alley where many of the racing legends of the day were family friends affectionately known as uncle and aunt. As a young man, he became a horseman working ranches out West. In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, he followed his father's example and traveled the globe while racing. An opportunity to instruct the Secret Service on evasive driving brought him to Virginia where he started a family, raised his son, and formed lasting friendships within the horse community. In the mid 1990’s, he returned home to Indianapolis and the IndyCar family. He loved animals, being outdoors, and working with his hands. Bill leaves behind a legacy of love and friendship and will be fondly remembered by the many people whose lives he enriched.
Bill is survived by his son, Peter; his daughter-in-law, Rachel; and his cherished grandchildren, Julian, Everly, and Calder.
A memorial will be held at a future date.
Bill will be deeply missed and loved by all who knew him.
