Virginia Kay Mitchell

August 1, 1938 — June 18, 2025

Virginia Kay Mitchell was born on August 1, 1938 in Rockville,Indiana to Virginia Davis and Elmer Riggen.

“Ginny-kay,” as she was called as a child was raised in Dana, Indiana by her father, Elmer Riggen and grandmother along with her older brother Gerald, ”Bucky”, Riggen. She knew her mother, who passed tragically shortly after childbirth, only from the stories her big brother shared with her as a child.

Following high school, Kay moved to Indianapolis where she met and married Victor Mitchell. They had three children; Joey Mitchell, Susie Apple and Cathy McCullars, who they raised on the southwest side of Indianapolis. All three children married and blessed Kay with eight grandchildren; Jessica, Shannon, Allison, Cassie, Katie, Sydney, Gracie and Ty. That’s right, seven granddaughters and one grandson between them! Later, she was blessed with ten great-granddaughters! Kay loved spending time with family, especially the grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed her family, laughing, shopping, watching birds, going to church, dancing, music, tea parties, storytelling, family holidays, and never turned down an ice cream cone or good company.

Her gentle kindness, compassion, smile, and laughter will be remembered by all who knew her, especially her family. She was always loved and she always belonged. “Gigi,” as she was called in her later years, spent her last twelve years living with Cathy, Travis, Gracie, and Ty McCullars. Their family lovingly welcomed her into their home and into their lives, giving her many more years to make memories and love her family- for that we are all truly grateful.

A word of special thanks goes to granddaughters Jessica and Gracie, both RN’s along with grandson, Ty, who is studying to become a Physician’s Assistant. They each gave loving care to their grandmother in her greatest time of need. Thank you also to the people of Main Street Hospice, especially Carly Wingham the nurse who cared for our mother so gently and kindly during the last weeks of her life.

We are truly blessed to have had her with us for nearly 87 wonderful years. She was surrounded by loving family and passed peacefully from this life on June 18, 2025 leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter. She was received in Heaven by her mother, whom she longed to know all of her life, and by her loving father and brother who adored her endlessly.

Thank you to our family and friends who have loved her, showed up for support, and those who have provided words of encouragement.
