Thomas “Tommy” L. Zachery Jr. was born on January 13, 1953, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Thomas L. Zachery Sr. and Esther Lene (Batts) Zachery. He was the oldest of five children.
Tommy graduated from Arsenal Technical High School and later began his career at Merchants National Bank, where he worked as a mail clerk for more than 20 years. He was loved by many of his co-workers and was known for his warm personality, kindness, and ability to make those around him laugh. His genuine spirit and wonderful sense of humor made him someone people truly enjoyed being around.
A devoted Christian, Tommy was a lifelong member of Trinity CME Church, where his faith remained an important part of his life. His love for people extended far beyond his immediate family. Tommy was like a father to many and was affectionately known as “Uncle” by the friends of his nieces and nephew. He opened his heart and his life to others, forming meaningful relationships that went far beyond family ties.
Tommy will be remembered for his loving heart, devotion to his faith and family, love of travel, and wonderful sense of humor and wit. He had a special way of bringing laughter to those around him and could brighten a room with his quick wit and playful personality. The countless lives he touched throughout his years are a testament to the kind of person he was.
To many, Tommy was more than a brother, uncle, co-worker, or friend. He was a source of love, laughter, encouragement, and wisdom. He was an example of what it means to be a good and faithful servant—someone who gave of himself freely and made others feel loved and welcomed.
Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas L. Zachery Sr. and Esther Lene Zachery.
He leaves to cherish his memory his four sisters, Carla Zachery, Paula Zachery, Carmela Merriwether, and Rhonda (Kenneth Walton); one nephew, Steven Zachery; two nieces, Taylor Merriwether and Lauren Merriwether; four grandnephews, Zion Carpenter, Amaari Zachery, Amonte Zachery, and Amandre Dickerson; one grandniece, Amaya Zachery; and a host of relatives, friends, and loved ones who will forever cherish the memories they shared with him.
Tommy’s life was a blessing to so many. His legacy of love, faith, family, kindness, and laughter will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Though his presence will be deeply missed, the memories he created, the lives he touched, and the love he gave will remain forever.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
