Thomas "Tom" Wayne Zimmerman

Thomas “Tom” Wayne Zimmerman, age 75, passed on December 11, 2025 peacefully in his home holding his daughter Ginger’s hand. Tom was born June 22, 1950 in Indianapolis, IN to John and Phyllis Zimmerman.

Tom attended Arsenal Technical High School and joined the United States Marine Corps in 1968, serving during the Vietnam War, making Corporal by 1970, then transferring to the Marine Corps Reserves until 1974. Thomas received the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal, and Rifle Marksmanship Badge, receiving his Honorable Discharge in 1974. Thomas married Sonja (Brattain) Zimmerman in 1971 and had three daughters Erika Anna, Tanya Marlene and Ginger Kay.

Tom was a diligent and hard-working commercial and residential painter until his retirement. He enjoyed building, remodeling, and yard work. He loved shopping at Walmart, singing Elvis Presley songs, and yelling at the Indianapolis Colts on game day. During his retirement, he enjoyed the slow pace of life and family and gave his heart to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Tom enjoyed church and spoke often of his newfound belief. In his final moments Tom prayed over his family and thanked the Lord for the oxygen in his lungs and had the strength of a true Marine to laugh and joke.

He is survived by his family Sonja Zimmerman, Erika (Paul) Franklin, Tanya (Shawn) Carpenter, and Ginger Mefford, 7 grandchildren, Donovan, Christopher, Kayla, Andrew, Derrick, Jaime, Tommy, and nine great grandchildren, Ryland, Sophia, Leon, Matthew Jr, Landon, Dylan, Ezekiel, Lilly, and Salem, his sister Rebecca (Zimmerman) Lambert and brother Joseph Zimmerman.

He is preceded in death by his parents John and Phyllis Zimmerman, brothers Jim and John Zimmerman and sisters Linda (Zimmerman) Moore and Diane (Zimmerman) Jameison.

Tom will be laid to rest at Crown Hill National Cemetery Columbarium.
