Steven Russell Sylce , 72, of Fishers, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on May 3, 2025, surrounded by his family, after a courageous 7 year battle with cancer. Steve was born on February 9, 1953 in Cheverly, Maryland to Jennie Mae and Harry Russell. He was the oldest of four children. He married the love of his life, Dawn, in January 1999 in Severna Park, Maryland. Together they built a life filled with love, faith and shared adventures. Steve was a proud graduate of Glen Burnie High School and took additional college courses at Anne Arundel Community College.
As a dedicated and distinguished member of the Boy Scouts of America, Steve was honored with the Silver Beaver Award. He served on the National Jamboree Stage Crew. He shared his love of scouting with his sons Jason and Eric. Steve was a troop leader to multiple troops both in Maryland and Indiana. He was an avid patch collector, a member of the Order of Arrow and was privileged to take Jason to Philmont.
Steve had many passions including scuba diving, volleyball, country line dancing, racquetball, skiing, watching movies, performing magic tricks, and hiking. He was an active member of many churches throughout his lifetime. He served as an elder at his Lutheran church and played guitar as the worship leader in Maryland. He served as a Sunday school teacher, was a part of the drama team and went on 2 mission trips to El Salvador.
Steve had a long and successful career in sales, most notably the flooring industry. He sold flooring in Pasadena, MD for 18 years, opened a flooring store in Severna Park, and later worked as a project manager for Blakely’s in Indiana. He also sold furniture and cars, but what he truly loved was the treasure hunting of antiques. As an avid auction-goer, Steve enjoyed discovering vintage items to resell on eBay and became so skilled at it that friends frequently asked him to sell items on consignment. If you knew Steve, he would tell you of the many special finds he found along the way.
Steve had a larger-than-life personality and a gift for storytelling. He loved to dress up, make people laugh, and be the life of the party. He brought joy and connection to everyone he met. Steve will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his adventurous spirit, and his commitment to his faith and community.
He is survived by his beloved wife Dawn, his children Jason (Jill), Rachel, Eric (Mary) and Amanda, his grandchildren Brittany, JJ, Anissa, Haley, Jaxon, Olivia, Kylee, Ryan, Alisa, Kenna, Kiersten, Tristan, Liam, Macie, Isabella, Ezra, Ezekiel, and his great -grandchildren, LJ, Joseph, Elianna, and Myles, his brother Mark Sylce from Glen Burnie, MD, his sister Karen (Ed) Holbruner of Milton, DE. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jennie Mae and Harry Russell Sylce, his sister, Sheryl Sylce, and his daughter Rebecca Sylce.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Crossroads Community Church. The visitation will be held at the same church, Crossroads Community at 14885 Southeastern Pkwy, Fishers, IN 46037, on Saturday, May 24, 2025 from 9am-10:30am. David Lowry will officiate the service at 11:00 am. Immediately following the service, a Celebration of Life lunch will be served for family members.
