In Memoriam: Steven Dale Howell

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Steve Howell, who left this world peacefully, surrounded by his family and friends, on August 20, 2026 in Indianapolis, Indiana, after a courageous and prolonged battle with cancer. Born on April 14, 1965, in Bethany, Missouri, Steve was a beacon of light and love to all who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, laughter, and unwavering faith.

Steve was the beloved son of Rex Howell and Lynda (Carter) Howell. Having learned from them to be nurturing, he carried forward the values instilled in him by his parents and grandparents, who predeceased him, and lived a life full of kindness and generosity. He is survived by his children, Lynda and Steven, and his siblings Bob (Stacey) and David, who will forever cherish his memory. Steve was married to Jada Roop, with whom he shared the joy of raising their two children to adulthood, until they eventually parted ways.

A dedicated scholar, Steve graduated from Central High School in St. Joseph, MO. He pursued higher education at Northwest Missouri State University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and later achieving his CPA license. His expertise and dedication were evident throughout his career as a Medicare auditor in healthcare, where he brought immense value to every organization he served.

Steve was a cherished member of the Church of God, a Worldwide Association, for nearly 44 years. His commitment to his faith was profound, as he actively participated in his local congregation by leading hymns, offering prayers, and delivering heartfelt sermonettes. His love for God’s word, family, Bible study and reading (in general) was in addition to his passion for the great outdoors God created. He found peace and joy in fishing and mushroom hunting as a young man and a lifetime of embracing God’s handiwork in the beauty of nature.

Those who knew Steve will remember him for his infectious smile and his remarkable ability to lighten any mood with laughter. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, embodying God’s love through acts of kindness and generosity. Steve’s life was a testament to the power of love, service, and faith.

In honoring Steve’s memory, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice. They also extend their deepest gratitude to the staff at Gentiva Hospice for the compassion and kindness they showed during Steve’s final days.

Steve Howell will be dearly missed but never forgotten. His memory lives on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. His example of following God’s way of righteousness was an inspiration to us all. May he rest in peace, enveloped in God's loving care while awaiting his Lord’s resurrecting trumpet call to eternal joy and a glorious new spiritual body as a member of God’s family.
