Stephen Joseph Marcum, a beloved father, grandfather,great grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on February 9, 2026, at Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield, Indiana. Born on September 10, 1948, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Stephen was a devoted member of his community and a cherished member of St. Ann's Catholic Church.
Stephen's life was defined by his unwavering love for his family. A hardworking single dad, he dedicated his life to providing the best for his children and grandchildren through his career at Perry Scaffolding and various janitorial jobs. His proudest accomplishments were the weekends spent with his grandchildren and the monthly lunches he cherished with his sister and great-grandkids. He instilled in them the values of hard work and financial responsibility, often humorously referring to his frugality as being "cheap."
He was a man of many interests, particularly enjoying music and a good laugh from his favorite comedies like The Three Stooges and Andy Griffith. A true connoisseur of good times, Stephen also had a passion for classic cars and was known to have great hair, often showcasing a charismatic personality that resonated with those around him. A gentle spirit, he brought joy to the lives of his family and friends with his quirks and a personality that shone brightly, even through quiet moments.
Stephen proudly served in the United States Army, embodying the qualities of a soldier on the battlefield as well as in life. He was a hero to his family, and his strong protective nature was ever-evident in the care he provided. Throughout his life, he formed lifelong friendships with individuals such as Steve Ladd, Carry and Donna Dick, Jerry Hicks, and Brad Pennington, reflecting his loyal and compassionate nature.
Stephen is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Gross (Denton), and his bonus daughter, Leslie Walters. He also leaves behind his loving sister, Kathy Simpson (Kenneth), sister in law Rita Marcum, his grandchildren Allison Bessent (Josh), Alexandra McFarland (Terry), Denton Gross III, Dylan Gross, and his great-grandchildren Addison McFarland, Ty McFarland, Theo McFarland, Sadie Bessent, Sophia Bessent, and Waylon Bessent, and many nieces, nephews. and cousins. They will carry his memory forward, forever grateful for the bonds they shared.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Margaret (Jobe) Marcum, brothers Arlis and Robert Marcum, sister Joyce Cannon, and nephew Kraig Simpson. Their memories will stay with Stephen, guiding him into eternal rest.
A visitation will take place on March 5, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a memorial service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Indiana Funeral Care - Greenwood Chapel, located at 2433 E. Main St., Greenwood, IN 46143.
