It is with great sadness that the family of Sheila Gilday, 89, would like to announce her passing on September 3 in Carmel, IN.
Sheila was born May 13, 1935 to Tancred and Helen Quin in Detroit, Michigan. She had two younger brothers, Fredrick and Michael.
Sheila would say she was a quiet child who enjoyed reading her books. Sheila graduated from Our Lady of Mercy High School (Detroit, MI). Then earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in speech and hearing from Marquette University (Milwaukee, WI). While attending university she met the love of her life and future husband, James Gilday. They married in October of 1961. In the beginning years of their marriage, they moved around a lot. Eventually landing in Carmel, IN, where Sheila really built her life. She raised her children, Jim and Kathleen, while having a full time job. Sheila’s relationship with the Lord was extremely important to her. She was founding member of St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church where she was extremely active by giving out donuts after mass, singing in choir, participating in multiple women’s groups, and being a Eucharistic Minister. Her friends were so valuable to her. Sheila enjoyed card club, book club, giving a listening ear, and definitely willing to give her opinion which was usually spot on. She was incredibly wise, to the point, and quite the jokester. Sheila liked to put on a show to make you laugh. It’s one of the reasons she studied theatre in college before switching majors. Her laugh was contagious. Sheila was funny, really funny, brave, beautiful, an amazing role model, and will be greatly missed.
Sheila was preceded in death by James Gilday (husband), Tancred and Helen Quin (parents), Fredrick and Michael Quin (brothers), and is survived by 2 children James Gilday, Jr. and Kathleen (Gilday) Niemann, along with grandchildren James Niemann, John (Madison Trout) Niemann, who will never forget the love she brought to their lives.
