Sharon James Townsend
November 3, 1946 – April 29, 2025
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved Sharon (Sherry) James Townsend, who went home to Jesus, her Maker and Creator, on April 29, 2025, at the age of 78. She was born on November 3, 1946, in Indianapolis, IN, and lived a full, enriching life dedicated to her husband, two daughters, one grandson, family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Robert L. James, and her mother, Alma B. James. She is survived by her husband of nearly 54 years, Donald (Don/Donnie) Townsend; her daughters, Sarah Townsend and Rachel Gaskins (Matthew); her wonderful grandson, Lucas Gaskins; and many special cousins.
As a young child, Sherry accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior.
She was raised in a local church and was a loyal servant of God, first and foremost. Sherry graduated from Arsenal Tech High School in 1964 and attended Indiana Central University (now the University of Indianapolis) in pursuit of a teaching career. It is rumored that she met her husband, Don, in the nursery at their church when she was only two years old, and they were married in 1971. Sherry worked in a medical office for a few years after they married, but once she became pregnant with her first daughter, she chose to focus on her family. She was always involved in her daughters’ school, serving as a room mom, and helped out in any way possible. Her girls were everything to her.
Sherry took organ and piano lessons early in life. For many years, she served as the organist and pianist at her childhood and adult church. She enjoyed taking family vacations, sewing, reading, and watching various TV programs. She “adopted” two daughters, Avery and Kate, and cared for them while their parents were at work, creating special memories. She was also “mom” to many of her daughters’ friends.
Her parents, husband, daughters, son-in-law, and grandson were her greatest joys. She loved nothing more than spending time with them, bragging about them, and sharing stories. Sherry had an infectious laugh and a warm smile that could light up any room. Although she could be stubborn at times, her caring and nurturing heart will be deeply missed. Wife, Mom, GRRR (Grandma), Friend—her titles were endless. Her love and wisdom have left an indelible mark on our lives. Though she will be dearly missed, we find comfort in knowing that she is no longer suffering and is living a forever life in heaven with Jesus, her wonderful and loving parents, and other family members and friends.
Visitation will take place on Friday, May 2, 2025, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Indiana Funeral Care, 2433 E Main Street, Greenwood, IN 46143, followed by a short celebration of life service where we will gather to honor Sherry’s memory and rejoice in the promise of everlasting life. The family will attend a burial service the following day.
