Ruth Schroeder passed away on May 15, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family after a long and full life marked by devotion to family, hard work, and fierce independence.
Ruth was born in Manilla, Iowa, on July 15, 1925, to Herman and Rebecca Jochimsen. As a small child, she moved to a farm outside of Flandreau, South Dakota, where she was raised by her uncle and aunt, Lewis and Emma Jochimsen. Her early years on the farm instilled in her a strong work ethic and resilience that would remain with her throughout her life.
As a young woman, Ruth moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where she met Robert Schroeder while he was on leave from the United States Air Force after completing his tour in Europe during World War II. The two were married on September 19, 1946, in Egan, South Dakota, and soon began their life together in Indiana.
Both Ruth and Bob attended Indiana University. After graduation, the couple settled in Indianapolis, where Ruth built an impressive professional career. Beginning as a secretary, she steadily advanced to become Vice President of a local insurance company before retiring, a remarkable achievement for a woman born in the 1920s who came from helping her uncle plow fields in South Dakota.
Ruth enjoyed golfing at Hillcrest Country Club and playing bridge with family and friends. She was a passionate fan of the Indianapolis Colts and Indiana University basketball. Ruth also loved the Indianapolis 500 and attended more than 30 races over the years. Even as her health declined, Sunday IndyCar races remained must-watch events. Her favorite driver was Helio Castroneves, and she was thrilled with his four wins.
Her real love was her family and her dogs. Ruth has two grandchildren and eight great grandchildren! Ruth had a number of good dogs over the years, being particularly fond of huskies. She was also known to a number of people as Mama Schroeder. Ruth always strived to be a positive influence on all the young people she came in contact with and helped many of them with her guidance.
Ruth is survived by her son, Miles Schroeder, and his wife, Geralyn; her grandchildren, Christina Bruno and Greg Schroeder; and her eight great-grandchildren. Christina and her husband, Matt, reside in Fishers, Indiana, with their children Vivian, Millie, Marietta, and Brooks. Greg and his wife, Katie, reside in Haverford, Pennsylvania, with their children Leo, Henry, Grant, and Willa Kate.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
