Ruth Emma Linton

October 25, 1929 — August 20, 2022

Indianapolis

Ruth Emma Linton née Burkhardt, 92, of Indianapolis, IN was called home Saturday, August 20, 2022. She was born October 25, 1929 in Stuttgart, Germany to Friedrich Burkhardt and Emma Burkhardt née Retter. She was exceptional in school and was valedictorian of her graduating class. She worked in Stuttgart Zeppelinbau as a telephone operator for the US Army where she met her husband Joe Z. Linton. The two hit it off right away and were married on February 22, 1952. They were both happily married for over 50 years.

Ruth’s personality was spitfire and came with a lot of wit and charm. She would speak her mind and let you know exactly how she felt about something.  She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, gardening, going to the movies, frequenting Café Heidelberg, reading and sewing. She took up fashion design classes and designed many of her own clothing and draperies. She was an active volunteer at the Indianapolis Civic Theater.  She had a great taste for the arts and music both which seemed to soothe her soul. Her ability to be humble allowed her to be adventurous and live a long and fulfilling life. She loved to travel and live life to the fullest. She was truly a matriarch and set a great example for her family.

Ruth was an active member of her church at Ft. Benjamin Harrison and enjoyed the Christmas and Easter German language services at Zion Evangelical Church in downtown Indianapolis. She would also periodically attend services at Otterbein United Methodist Church with her daughter Barbara and family which is where she and Joe celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Survivors include her son-in-law Don Henley, grandsons Joel FoxDoan (Erin), Jonathon Henley (Shane Groves) and granddaughter Angela Hawtin (Tim) her great-grandchildren Nathaniel Strawmyer, Tylor Strawmyer, Dylan Strawmyer, Joey Doan, Patrick Doan, Victoria Doan, Joshua Hawtin, Arianna Hawtin and her great-great grandchildren Lucas and Leo Strawmyer. She was preceded in death by her husband Joe, daughter Barbara Henley, her parents, brother Siegfried Burkhardt and nephew Edgar Burkhardt.
