Robert Joseph Payne, affectionately known as “Bobby,” passed away on July 12, 2026. Born in Indianapolis on July 20, 1945, Robert’s life was marked by quiet dedication, deep love for his family, and meaningful passions that enriched not only his world but all those fortunate enough to know him.

Robert shared a remarkable journey with his beloved wife, Sharon Payne. Their union began on July 25, 1966, a milestone marking sixty years of devotion, partnership, and unwavering support. Together, they built a family whose bonds are a testament to the strength and warmth that Robert embodied.

He is survived by his loving wife Sharon, daughters Wendie (Chris) Jarrett and Sheryl (Jeff) Keim, his cherished sister Georganna (Don) Vandermoere, and his brother Frankie (Jeanne) Payne. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Andrew Jarrett, Chris Jarrett, Kirsten Oscarson, Cameron Keim, as well as six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who brought immeasurable joy to his days.

Robert was a steadfast caregiver, most notably to his wife Sharon in recent years—a reflection of his deeply empathetic nature and enduring commitment to those he loved. For his family, Robert was a steady hand and a compassionate presence, always ready with support, wisdom, and love.

Remembered for his passion for coin collecting, Robert’s dedication led to a personal achievement: having his coins featured in a coin book, a proud moment reflecting his expertise and commitment to this lifelong interest. He also found great fulfillment in sharing simple joys—especially fishing trips with his grandchildren and with friends at Walker's place. These moments became cherished traditions, weaving together generations with laughter and lasting memories.

Robert was preceded in death by his father George Herlen Payne Sr, mother Louise Zoellner Payne, and his siblings Rose Outcalt, Barbara Hoyt, and George Herlen Payne Jr. Their memories, like his, continue to live on in the stories and hearts of those who survive them.

The story of Robert Joseph Payne is one of enduring love, quiet mastery of his interests, and a selfless nature that left a gentle yet lasting mark on his family and friends. His care, wisdom, and steadfast support shaped the lives around him in ways words can only begin to express.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
