Robert James Mercer, age 81, born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and a longtime resident of Westfield, Indiana, passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family.
Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and a man whose presence filled every room he entered. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fonnie and Theda Mercer, and his brother, Wayne Mercer. He is survived by his beloved wife, Helen Mercer; his brothers, Charlie Mercer (Betty) and Dennis Mercer (Sandy); and his sister-in-law, Pat Mercer, wife of the late Wayne Mercer.
He is also survived by his loving children, Anthony “Tony” Mercer, Tamara “Tami” Medsker, and Joanna Wesling; along with seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy. He also shared a special bond with his bonus grandchildren, who held a meaningful place in his heart.
Bob was a proud retiree of Chrysler, where he dedicated many years of hard work—although he liked to joke that he really just got paid to sleep on picnic tables. Though he wasn’t a big man in stature, he had a larger-than-life presence. He never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone, often talking their ear off and leaving them smiling. He also loved trying to stump his son with random trivia, always enjoying the back-and-forth.
He found happiness in the simple things he loved most—riding his Harley-Davidson Trike, especially alongside his youngest daughter, who shared his love for riding, and spending time outdoors. Years ago, he especially enjoyed having horses, a passion he shared with his wife, and some of the best years of their lives were spent together caring for them. He also shared his love of animals with his oldest daughter, a bond they both cherished. Above all, he adored his dogs, Sophie and Lizzie, who held a special place in his heart.
Bob will be remembered for his warmth, his humor, and his genuine interest in others. He had a way of making people feel known and welcomed, and his memory will live on in the countless conversations, laughter, and love he shared.
A celebration of life will be held on May 3rd beginning at noon at 9306 East 700 North, Wilkinson, Indiana 46186.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the ASPCA in Bob’s memory, in honor of his love for animals:
