In Loving Memory of Robert Scott “Scott” Knutson

February 21, 1961 – November 5, 2026

Robert “Scott” Knutson, 65, passed away on Thursday, November 5, 2026, surrounded by his loving family following a battle with cancer.

Born in Hammond, Indiana, to Robert Arthur and Joan Marie (Coughlin) Knutson, Scott grew up in Munster, Indiana. His adventurous spirit took him to many places throughout his life, though he spent much of his adult life in Sarasota, Florida.

Scott attended Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business, where he was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. A devoted Hoosier at heart, his love for Indiana University remained a lifelong passion.

Scott built an extraordinary career in the travel industry, beginning with Coachman and United Airlines, followed by 20 years with Carnival Cruise Lines and 15 years with Costa Cruise Lines, where he served as Vice President of North America, Sales & Trade Marketing. A beloved boss, mentor, and leader, Scott was admired as much for his kindness, generosity, and genuine care for others as for his professional accomplishments. He built lasting friendships and left a meaningful impression on those fortunate enough to work alongside him.

Together, Scott and Carol traveled the world, embracing the beauty of different people, places, and cultures. Their adventures gave them a deep appreciation for the world and the people in it, a gift they shared with their children by teaching them to approach life with open hearts, open minds, and a curiosity for all the world has to offer.

But Scott’s greatest legacy was never defined by a title or professional achievement. It was the way he made people feel.

Scott had a remarkable gift for lighting up a room. Incredibly funny, quick-witted, and always ready with a joke, he brought laughter wherever he went. He had an infectious zest for life, a generous heart, and a warmth that made everyone feel welcome. He appreciated the finer things in life while remaining wonderfully humble, gentle, and compassionate.

Above all else, Scott was a devoted family man. A loving partner, proud father, cherished grandfather, brother, and loyal friend, he found his greatest joy in bringing people together and creating lasting memories. Whether traveling the world, cheering on his beloved Indiana Hoosiers, or enjoying the companionship of his treasured soul-dog, Scooter, Scott embraced life with enthusiasm and an unmistakable sense of humor.

Scott is survived by his loving partner and wife of 36 years, Carol Knutson; his three children, Kelsey Shutts (James), Logan Knutson (Jami), and Riley Knutson (Josie); and his beloved grandchildren, Jace, Olivia, and Ellison, who affectionately knew him as “Potty” or “Papa Knute.” His family will also welcome a precious granddaughter in March 2027, carrying his love and legacy into the next generation.

He is also survived by his siblings, Kathleen Ryan (Bob), Beth Wood (Dennis), Eric Knutson, Colleen Knutson (Lisa), Patrick Knutson (Karin), and Michael Knutson (Michelle), along with his 22 beloved nieces and nephews, their spouses, extended family, and countless friends whose lives were made brighter by knowing him.

Scott was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Arthur and Joan Marie Knutson; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Robert and Ethel Slaven; his sister-in-law, Kate Porter-Knutson; and his nephew, Michael Carl.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Life’s Journey for the compassionate care provided during Scott’s final days, to Carol for her unwavering love and devotion, and to the family and friends who surrounded him with comfort and support.

A Celebration of Scott’s Life will be held on Sunday, November 22, 2026, at Indiana Funeral Care – North, 8151 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, IN 46250. Visitation will begin at 12:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service at 2:00 p.m. A gathering of family and friends will follow at a nearby family home.

In honor of Scott’s vibrant spirit, guests are encouraged to wear shades of blue in lieu of traditional black attire. Flowers or memorial donations may be directed to Indiana Funeral Care.

Scott’s ashes will be scattered at sea during a future family vacation, honoring his love for the ocean and time spent with family. Its endless shades of blue will forever remind us of his beautiful blue eyes and adventurous spirit.

Scott’s legacy lives on through the family he cherished, the friendships he nurtured, the adventures he shared, and the countless moments of laughter he inspired.

A life well lived. A family deeply loved. A legacy that will never be forgotten.
