Robert Bruce Spear, 95, of Greenwood, Indiana, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2026, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Robert, known to everyone as Bob, was born on March 26, 1931, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He attended Arsenal Technical High School, where he met the love of his life, Doris L. Houghland. The two were married in 1950 and shared 61 devoted years together until her passing.
Following his education, Bob began his career as a draftsman and, through dedication and hard work, rose through the ranks—serving as head of engineering and sales before ultimately becoming president of Atkomatic Valve Company. His professional life reflected his strong work ethic, leadership, and commitment to excellence.
A man of humble beliefs, Bob was a member of the Disciples of Christ Christian Church. He lived out his values of faith, family, and integrity in a steady and unassuming way throughout his life. He enjoyed singing in the choir and performing beautiful solos.
He served in the United States Naval Reserves beginning in 1951, honoring his commitment to his country.
Bob had a lifelong love of sports. He was a standout golfer in his youth, winning a state title in high school. He remained passionate about the game throughout his life—including achieving a hole-in-one at the remarkable age of 90. He also enjoyed refereeing basketball and softball.
In his later years, Bob shared a loving and devoted partnership of 14 years with Millie Thompson, whose companionship brought him great comfort and joy.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris L. Spear (Houghland), and his son, Gary Spear.
He is survived by his children, Susan Ware and her husband Paul, Timothy Spear and his wife Janice, David Spear and his wife Margaret, and Gordon Spear, along with his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who were a constant source of pride and happiness.
Bob will be remembered for his quiet strength, his devotion to family, and the steady, independent way he lived his life.
