Richard Gene Thomas, born on August 17, 1940, in Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away on February 28, 2026, in Franklin, Indiana. He was 85 years old at the time of his death. Richard led a life rich in service and dedication, both to his family and his community.

Richard's professional journey was diverse and impressive in the field of food service, working with renowned establishments such as Venture Foods, Spice of Life Cafe and Catering, Crystal Catering, MBP Catering, Knobby's Restaurant, Parties to Please, the Westin Hotel, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. His dedication and expertise guided him to various roles within these businesses, culminating in a fulfilling position as a caterer with Jonathan Byrd Restaurant most recently. Additionally, from 1988 to 1994, he owned and operated RGT Company, a venture focused on the sales of commercial drapery and blinds.

An alumnus of Broad Ripple High School, Richard graduated in 1958 and was recognized for his involvement as one of the original participants in Junior Achievement. He continued his education post-high school, acquiring skills in Management Development Training, Manufacturing Standard Training, and Hazardous Material Training. He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1961, adding to his wealth of life experiences.

In his retirement, Richard found joy in N-scale model railroading, a hobby that allowed him to express his creativity and attention to detail.

Richard's commitment to his community was evident through his active involvement with several organizations, including a distinguished tenure with the Optimist Club of Northside Indianapolis, serving as President, Indianapolis, Northside Optimist Club,  Lt. Governor, South District Optimist, Decorating Chairman for the Optimist International National Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, and as the Arrangements Chairman for the Indiana South District Optimist, Member of Northside Optimist Club and a member of the American Legion Post 0252.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Thomas; son, Scott Thomas and wife; stepson, Andrew Rule and wife; seven grandchildren; and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas R. and Margaret (Smith) Thomas.

Richard Gene Thomas will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for the love and devotion he shared with family and the community he cherished.

A service of remembrance will take place at Indiana Funeral Care, 2433 E. Main Street, Greenwood, IN 46143 on Monday, March 16, 2026. Visitation beginning at 10:00 am until 12:00 pm. Memorial service will begin at noon with Pastor Kerry Huffman officiating. Burial to immediately follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, IN 46250.
