Born on March 14, 1944, Richard lived a full life enriched by meaningful relationships, steadfast dedication, and treasured memories.

A graduate of high school, Richard answered the call of duty and served honorably in the United States Navy. From May 1961 to March 1965, he was stationed aboard the USS Newport News, where he embraced the responsibilities and camaraderie that military life offered. His time in service was a defining chapter that instilled in him lifelong values of discipline and commitment.

Richard’s greatest joys centered around his family and his love for all things automotive. From working on cars to drag racing alongside his son Richard for over two decades, he shared countless exhilarating moments that solidified their bond. His passion for automobiles was not merely a hobby but a vibrant thread weaving through his family life.

Richard was a simple man who found joy in life’s quiet moments. He loved starting his day with a good cup of coffee with just a bit of cream, and he treasured the time spent sitting in his garage visiting with friends, family, and neighbors. Richard valued the connections he made throughout his life and especially cherished the lifelong friendship he shared with his high school friend, Dick Taylor.

Early on, Richard also cherished his experiences with his daughter, Becky, especially their excursions to various amusement parks, fostering a close and joyful relationship. The family together often traveled to the Virginia Beach area, delighting in the company of their extended relatives and creating treasured memories that spanned many years.

On July 17, 1965, Richard married Patricia (Lewis) Carter, the love of his life, embarking on a partnership that lasted until her passing on January 18, 2020. Their marriage stood as one of his proudest accomplishments, a testament to enduring love and unwavering companionship.

Richard is mourned by his son, Richard (Vicky) Carter II; his daughter, Rebecca (Tony) Johnson; and his beloved grandchildren, Corey Johnson, Wesley (Hannah) Carter, Dylan Carter and his girlfriend Kelsey, Reese (Elizabeth) Etzler, and Addie (Lucas) Eastburn. Their lives are deeply enriched by his presence, guidance, and love.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Carter; his parents, Horton and Maxine (Toler) Carter; and his brother, Bill Carter. Their memories live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and his legacy of dedication, family devotion, and vibrant spirit will continue to inspire and resonate.
