Phillip Anthony Chin was born on November 7, 1941, in Kingston, Jamaica. He departed this life peacefully on April 21, 2026, at the age of 84. He was the second of seven children, raised in the parish of St. Ann.
From a young age, Phillip had a natural drive to understand how things worked. He learned by observing, doing, and trying again until he got it right—a mindset that stayed with him throughout his life.
He became an engineer mechanic, a role that suited him well. A builder at heart, Phillip was known for his resourcefulness, strong work ethic, and creativity. If something broke, he could fix it. If there was a problem, he found a way through it—and he spoke with his heart and honesty.
Over time, his life was shaped by his Christian faith. He came to know Christ, and that faith became a steady foundation—guiding how he lived, how he saw the world, and how he carried himself. Those who knew him will remember his joyful personality, fearless presence, and deep faith.
As a family, they traveled and lived in different countries, where Phillip continued to build a life rooted in hard work, discipline, and purpose. In later years, he made his home in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Phillip loved Caribbean food, family gatherings, and cookouts filled with laughter and fellowship.
And yes… he loved ice cream.
Phillip would often be heard singing his favorite song by Stevie Wonder— “I Just Called to Say I Love You.” And if you ever heard him sing those words… understand this clearly—he meant it, from the bottom of his heart. The love he gave. The lessons he taught. The example he set. And those simple words were powerful — “I just called to say I love you.”
So today, as we remember Phillip Anthony Chin, we don’t just mourn his passing. We carry him forward. In how we stand. In how we speak. In how we take care of one another. Because that’s what he did, and that’s what he leaves behind. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who found great joy in spending time with his family, sharing stories, and offering guidance.
Phillip leaves behind a lasting legacy of wisdom, strength, and love. He is survived by his loving wife, Eling Chin, and cherished by his children, Owen Williams (stepson), Karen Chin-Edwards, Fongquee Chin, Tung You Chin, Doreen Chin-Mason, and Jason Chin, along with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
A funeral service will be held at Noon on Saturday, May 17, 2026 at Capitol City Seventh Day Adventist, 1801 E. 49th Street, Indianapolis, IN 46205. visitation will begin at 11 a.m.
Rest well, Phillip.
You are deeply loved.
And you will never be forgotten.
