Nichole Ross

February 13, 1986 — June 15, 2020

How does one announce the passing of a loving, vibrant, young woman taken from us all too soon?

Nichole Ross left this life on June 16, 2020. Her death was unexpected but followed years of debilitating illness.

She was born on February 13, 1986 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. She grew up there, in the heartland. She was an all-American girl with Midwest values, a Midwest outlook, and a firm faith in her Creator. She could trace her ancestors back to the Mayflower.

In grade school she was the delight of her teachers. She had a sweet singing voice and sang a lovely, favorite song from the movie "Hook" in the school talent show. And she enjoyed and participated in many activities such as intramural basketball.

She traveled with her family, twice across the country and twice to the Bahamas to sail on her Aunt and Uncle's seagoing catamaran, Dragonfly.

She attended Covenant High School, and the Indianapolis International Church of Christ, where she dedicated her life to the Lord. After high school graduation from Avon High School, she continued her education, earning the title of Certified Medical Assistant as an A student.

Nichole was joyful, with the biggest smile in the world. She always believed in and looked for the best in everyone and everything. If you met Nichole, you could not help but love her. She was passionate and decisive in everything she did. She loved going to church camp, going to concerts, the zoo, the children's museum. She loved being outdoors, whether camping, boating, hiking, or rock climbing. She loved to cook and delighted in having company over so she could prepare a meal. And all her life she loved music, from church songs, to pop, to karaoke, to singing songs and lullabies to her children. She listened to all periods and genres. Her love for music was so great she often remarked that her dream job would be selecting background music for Hollywood movies.

Nichole was fearless. She loved challenges. She was the first child in the family to swim the width of Dragonfly, underwater, in the open ocean. She earned a yellow belt in Taekwondo. Once, on short notice, she was drafted to drive in the Indianapolis Soap Box Derby to fill out the field. Despite not having the experience of the regular competitors, she won her first two heats. And her courage and determination were no better demonstrated than when she and her father rock-climbed a 900-foot Flatiron outside Boulder Colorado, experienced a lightning strike while on the summit, then free-rappelled down to its base.

Nichole loved. She was a daughter, a sister, a wife, and a mother. She was her mother's beloved and her father's "pookie." She adored her younger brother (even when they fought over strategy in video games like Zelda). She had a special bond with her half-brother Noah, who shared a mutual love of everything Harry Potter. She loved visiting her Gran in French Lick. In March of 2016 she began dating Patrick Ashton, an old friend from high school, and 14 months later became his wife and stepmother to his daughters Sophia and Madeline Ashton. She made friends easily and kept them, in large numbers. But most of all, she loved her children, Trenton and Paisley, with a fierceness and devotion only a mother can understand. She regularly attended Traders Point Christian church and was committed to raising her children in a Christ-centered environment. There was nothing she did not do and would not have done for them.

And now she has traveled onward. She is survived by Trenton and Paisley, her husband Patrick (stepdaughters Sophia and Madeline), her father Mark (Johnna) Ross, her mother Bonnie (Arnie) Bowers, her brother Zach Ross, her half-brother Noah Bowers, her grandmother Katy Weikert, and too many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends to name.

She impacted all of us, and while she will no longer be with us to share this life, in the words of the poet: "Her memory is now our keepsake, with which we'll never part. God has her in His keeping, we have her in our hearts."
