Michael L. Mannin

Michael L. "Mike" Mannin, 82, of Avon, Indiana, formerly of Manhattan, Illinois, died Sunday, August 23, 2026, at his residence at Independence Village in Avon.

He was born June 15, 1944, in Hoopeston, Illinois, the son of John T. Mannin and L. Rose (Morlan) Mannin Glass.

Mike graduated from Hoopeston East Lynn High School in 1962 and went on to attend classes at Palomar Junior College in California. After returning from California, he joined Caterpillar in Joliet, Illinois, where he spent nearly 40 years in manufacturing and factory accounting before retiring in 2004. He was a proud member of Machinists Union Local 851 and was recognized as a Lifetime member in 2014 after 50 years of union membership.

On September 26, 1964, he married Glenda L. Wright. Together they made their home in Manhattan, Illinois, where Mike would live for 52 years. Glenda preceded him in death on July 29, 2010. In 2022, health concerns brought Mike to Indiana so he could be closer to his son and grandchildren.

Mike was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and a Chicago Bears fan, and he followed high school and college sports with equal enthusiasm. He was also a devoted racing fan, taking in many nights at Santa Fe Speedway in Hinsdale, Illinois, and attending USAC, IndyCar, and NHRA events over the years.

Near the end of his career at Caterpillar and throughout his retirement, Mike and Glenda enjoyed traveling both at home and abroad. Branson, Missouri, and Las Vegas, Nevada, were their favorite domestic destinations. They were staying in Las Vegas during the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, an experience that did nothing to dim their ambition to see the wider world. They began traveling internationally exactly one year later, and their trips to Europe took them to Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy. Their most ambitious journey of all fulfilled Glenda’s lifelong dream of visiting Australia and New Zealand.

Survivors include his son, John (Brenda) Mannin of Indianapolis; his grandchildren, Emmerson Mannin, Rosie Mannin (William Rulon), and August Mannin; a sister, Beverly Atkins of Champaign, Illinois; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Mitchell Glass; his wife, Glenda; and a brother, Thomas Mannin.

No funeral or visitation is planned, and the family will hold a memorial service at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Indiana Funeral Care West.
