Michael Johnson, a member of the 1969 class of Southport High School, an Indiana University graduate, and a devoted “Papa” known for his boundless love and spirited nature, passed away peacefully on April 6th, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on January 13, 1951, Mike lived a life marked by his love for his family. One of Mikes's greatest joys was his role as a Papa. He adored his grandchildren and took great delight in attending their sporting events, cheering them on, and often offering unsolicited advice and razzing the referees. Whether it was on the sidelines of a game, sharing jokes over the phone, or sitting around the table enjoying a family meal, Mike cherished every moment spent with his grandchildren.

When his sons were younger, Mike found great fulfillment leading Baxter YMCA Indian Guides and coaching Center Grove Little League Baseball, imparting valuable life lessons to countless young individuals and leaving a lasting impact on their lives. As his boys grew up, Mike loved getting to know their friends and making them laugh with his great storytelling and teasing.

Big Mike was the happiest at the lake where he found joy in watching his sons and grandkids learn to ski and wakeboard, spending time with his Nancy, sharing stories around the campfire, and creating new adventures for the grandkids. Mike found peace and contentment at the lake.

Mike will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His words of wisdom and larger-than-life presence will be remembered by those left behind.

Mike is survived by his beloved Nancy; his five sons, Keith (Erin), Benjamin (Jenny), Alexander (Sabrina), Nicholas (Laurie), and Nathaniel (Gina); his adoring grandchildren, Zayda, Garrett, Callie, Brady, Brooks, Kiersten, Evan, Kaden, Reed, Gavin, Sophia, and Ava; his devoted brother, Terry (Marie); and his niece and nephew, Ashley and Matt (Jenna).

Michael Johnson is preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Johnson; his sister, Debbie Johnson; and daughter-in-law, Heather Day Johnson.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Center Grove Youth Baseball in memory of Michael Johnson: P.O. Box 828, Greenwood, IN, 46142.

A celebration of Michael Johnson’s life will be held for family to honor his memory and share stories of his life.
