Marvin D. Sangsland was born on October 28, 1943, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan. A man of deep faith and unwavering compassion, Marvin dedicated his life to serving God, his family, and his community.
On August 31, 1968, Marvin married the love of his life, Bonnie Jean Rector. Together, they shared a life of devotion to ministry and to one another, raising three beloved children: Marvin Jr., Tamera Carolina, and Nathaniel Allen.
Marvin served faithfully as a lay pastor and evangelist in several churches across the country. His ministry spanned decades and included service at Bethesda Full Gospel Chapel in Kalamazoo, Michigan; Shilo Miracle Center in Spokane, Washington; Life Tabernacle in Nampa, Idaho; New Life Fellowship in Boise, Idaho; and The Witness Foundation, which he founded. In Indianapolis, Indiana, he ministered at Abundant Life Memorial Church, St. Peter’s Street Church of God, Mount Calvary Full Gospel Church, Mission Universal Gospel Chapel, and Body of Christ Fellowship.
He was educated at Portage High School, Butler University, and IUPUI, always valuing learning as a way to better serve and understand God’s purpose.
Marvin lived a life marked by humility, integrity, and vision. He loved peace, avoided confrontation, and gave of himself generously, often led by his heart. He lived modestly, not for lack of means, but by choice—so that he could give more to others and to the church. He welcomed all without prejudice, believing that everyone deserved love, respect, and a chance to grow in God’s grace.
Marvin is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Bonnie; their children Marvin Jr., Tamera Carolina, and Nathaniel Allen; and his brothers Wesley, Rodney, and John. He also leaves behind many cousins, nieces, and nephews who cherished his wisdom, warmth, and unwavering faith.
He was preceded in death by his father Carl Sangsland (1976), mother Inga Sangsland (2003), his brother Irving Sangsland (2000), half-brothers Glenn Gibson (2001) and Gilbert Gibson (1962), brother Carl Sangsland, and half-sister Joyce Houseman (2005).
Marvin’s legacy is one of service, sacrifice, and steadfast love—for God, for country, and for all who crossed his path. His greatest wish was that others would carry on the torch he bore, working to make this world a better place.
