Marilyn S. Gilbert

September 10, 1946 — September 21, 2021

Marilyn S. Gilbert ( Susie May ), Susie was one of six children born to Paul and Jean May. She had 3 children of her own. Susie had a hard life raising us children by herself, but she was a good mom and did the best that she knew how. She lost her oldest son Virgil to a tragic car accident when he was only 17 years old. She overcame a lot in her life and joined AA prior to her sons death. Her recovery impacted others in the family as well. Her parents both joined AA and then her older brother did also. She persevered and eventually went to college for cosmetology and became a licensed beautician. She worked at BoRics Hair salon as the general manager for many years. She also enjoyed doing hair at home for many friends and family. You would often find her with a cup of coffee, scissors in her hand and someone in her chair. Susie had a heart of gold and would do anything for the people in her life. She retired early so that she could care for her aging mother. She opened her home and heart to many friends and family. Her house was like a revolving door and a safe haven to many, especially neighborhood kids, family and friends that needed a place to stay while they got on their feet. Life certainly gave her some hard knocks, but through it all, she showed a lot of grit and determination and learned how to roll with the punches. She will be greatly missed by many.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul W. May and Jean C. May, brothers Paul T. May (Skip), William E. May ( Billy ) her husband Virgil Gilbert (Sonny) and her precious son, Virgil E. Gilbert. She is survived by her remaining siblings Robert May (Bobby ) Barbara Shull (May) and Brian May, her daughters Paula Hopkins ( John Hopkins) Tina Thomas ( Michael Thomas ) and stepson Chad Gilbert, grandchildren Candice Cane (Cole Schulmeyer) , Tony Hopkins, Michelle McKinnon, Ashley McKinnon, Kassie Thomas, Kristen Thomas, Isabella Hopkins, Desiree Taylor and Brandy Taylor, great grandchildren Jordan McKinnon, Cooper Thompson, Kiel Gibson, Levi Cane and Alexander Stone, and many other nieces, nephews and cousins.
