Margaret Elizabeth Stone

Margaret Elizabeth “Carney” Stone, 78 of Greencastle, Indiana passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loved ones on August 27th, 2026. She was born on November 6, 1947 in Beech Grove, Indiana to Lila and Thomas Carney.

Margaret was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, neighbor, and friend. She played many roles, in many lives. Above all else she valued her family and cherished the time she spent with the people she loved. Her warmth, kindness, and unconditional love touched the lives of so many.

Margaret enjoyed gardening, fishing, crocheting, crafting, going to festivals and garden shows, crime shows, doing sudoku puzzles, country music, her house plants, and above all else spending time with her family. She especially loved watching her grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in sports whether that be basketball, color guard, volleyball, tennis, football, choir, or band- you name it, she was there cheering them on…. Or buying up the concession stand. She also had a habit of talking your ear off during wrestling nights, in a good way.

To those who knew her, her hugs were something special- an expression of the love that she carried in her heart for her family. She knew no stranger. Margaret could talk with anyone, about anything. Margaret was known for reminding those around her to look on the bright side of things. One quote once written by her - “ Just remember no matter how bad of a situation you’re in, your problems can be solved”. Those words truly reflected the way she lived. She didn’t fret the small things, she truly lived with love, and appreciation for those who meant the most to her.

Margaret always wanted to be a home ec teacher… well, she taught us all in her own way. She took pride in her work, and providing and caring for her family. Throughout her many careers, the job she took the most serious was being a Grandma and Great Grandma. Those are the very positions she excelled in. Let her tell it, her grandkids and great grandkids could do no wrong. As she was giving candy or treats before meals, or spoiling them - she’d say, “that’s what grandma’s are for” while serving ice cream because it’s “milk so it has to be healthy”. She was always there, always showed up, and always smiling. She was a great listener.

Margaret is survived by her four siblings; her daughters, Elizabeth (Mike) Rusie and Laurie (Bill) Holloway; her five granddaughters; and her five great-grandchildren and many friends and family members. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Lila & Thomas Carney, and her late husband Jessie Stone.

Even though her soul is in heaven, her memory will remain in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, and all who were fortunate enough to know her. There will always be stories to be told, and silly memories to share. Though she is no longer here to give us her hugs, or remind us to look on the bright side, we can each hold her everlasting love with us for the rest of our days

A funeral service will be held at Noon on Friday, September 4, at Indiana Funeral Care West, 5791 Rockville Road, Indianapolis, IN 46224. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until service time.

A Graveside Service will take place at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens, 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, IN 46250, on September 4, 2026, at 2:30 pm.
