Marcia Anne Altman, age 74, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026 in Indianapolis surrounded by her family, after a year-long courageous battle with ALS.
Marcia was born January 22, 1952 in Detroit, MI to the late John Hunsinger and Merry Carol (Shook) Hunsinger.
A graduate of Delta College (Midland, MI), Marcia enjoyed an impressive and respected career in healthcare, starting as a respiratory and pulmonary therapist with Riley Hospital for Children, then clinical instructor with IU School of Medicine, and department director opening the renowned pulmonary lab at IU Hospital North. Having received numerous awards in her field, her research has been published in several periodicals and books.
Her greatest accomplishment of her life, however, was her five children. A fierce mother, she defined a life of sacrificial love, always putting the needs of her children before her own. With five children under six years old, she often would tell onlookers that she felt like the luckiest person in the world. Blessings abound through the years, as she welcomed fifteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, gleefully attending every sports game, choir concert, and play that she could.
She was soft-spoken but passionate and purposed, kind and compassionate. She continued to find joy every day. She was a knitter, crocheter, quilter; a baker and pianist. Lover of science fiction and shopper of antiques. She was a mother to all who needed to be mothered. She was loved by so many.
In addition to her parents, Marcia was preceded in death by her brother John Hunsinger and her grandson Decker Altman.
Marcia is survived by two brothers: Eric (Patricia) Hunsinger of Frankfort, MI and Kurt Hunsinger of Aurora, CO. She is also survived by her children: Charity (Steven) Gwaltney of Starkville, MS; Hahn (Jennifer) Altman of Lizton, IN; Matthew (Cheryl) Altman of Frisco, NC; Monica (Scott) Wechsler of Indianapolis, IN; April (John) Reynolds of Indianapolis, IN. And by fourteen grandchildren: Caleb (JoAnna) Gwaltney, Joshua (Chasity) Gwaltney, Brian (Brianne) Taylor, Ethan Altman, Mason (Sara) Altman, Jolie Altman, Logan Altman, Gretchen Atman, Tessa (Nathan Redinger) Wechsler, Cody (Kaleigh Freeman) Wechsler, Drew (Aime Zuniga) Tremper, Alexandra Reynolds, Isabelle Reynolds, Amelia Reynolds. As well as ten great-grandchildren: Evelynn Gwaltney, Jaxson Taylor, Macie Taylor, Tyler Bates, Piper Bates, Finn Freeman, Lucas Zuniga-Tremper, Wyatt Redinger, Declan Redinger, Scott Wechsler.
Services will be held at Fall Creek Church in Indianapolis on February 6th with visitation at 10:30am and funeral at 12:00pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Gleason Foundation (teamgleason.org) or to the ALS Association (ALS.org) to improve the lives of people living with ALS and those who care for them.
