A beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend, Luke Edward Smith peacefully passed away at home on July 14, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 42 years old. Born on January 20, 1984, in Madison, Indiana, Luke's life was a testament to love, service, and perseverance.
Luke is survived by his Loving wife Tricia and beautiful daughters Rayne, Amelia, and Kaliegh. Luke was the cherished son of Peggy LeGrand and Robert Lloyd Smith with his stepmother Debbie. His sister Carrie and brothers Aaron and Josh will forever hold him in their hearts. He also leaves behind his step brothers Ethan with his wife Elli, and Kevin with his wife Ashleigh. Luke's legacy of warmth and kindness continues through his nieces Maddie, Jaylee, Emilee, Olive, Jacqueline, Evelyn, and Everleigh, and nephews Jace, Gus, Sam, Jace, and Greyson. Additionally, he is mourned by numerous in-laws, aunts, uncles, cousins, and more friends than he would have ever claimed he deserved. He was predeceased by his dear sister Jennifer and brother Faron.
Luke's journey began in the halls of South Ripley High School, from which he graduated in 2002. Luke was a proud Eagle Scout, the early foundation of his dedication, leadership, and commitment to serving the community. Through this esteemed organization, he cultivated a love for the outdoors and a deep sense of responsibility to those around him. His scouting experiences laid the foundation for a life imbued with purpose and camaraderie. He pursued higher education at IU Columbus, earning a bachelor's degree in general studies with a concentration in social and behavioral science. In 2002 he entered the Army. His service in the Indiana Army National Guard ended in 2018, where he served with distinction as an Infantryman and Cavalry Scout. He valued this service highly and attained the rank of Sergeant First Class. His skill and passion for shooting made him a revered Infantry instructor for the Indiana Guard. His commitment to his country saw him complete two overseas tours in Afghanistan, returning from his second deployment with the brain cancer that would ultimately take his life. Luke's brothers-in-arms fondly remember his unwavering camaraderie and loyalty.
In 2016, Luke married the love of his life, Tricia Smith, on a crisp autumn day, November 26th. Their marriage was a journey of enduring love, filled with cherished memories and shared dreams. Together, they created a home brimming with warmth, laughter, and an unbreakable bond. Tricia was not just his partner but his confidante and best friend, standing by his side through life's many adventures.
He loved anything he could tinker with, shoot, or set on fire. Luke had a knack for solving problems and helping others. Luke was known for his infectious sense of humor and his innate ability to make everyone around him smile. He had a gift for lightening the mood, effortlessly bringing joy to any room he entered. Yet, beneath his jovial exterior was a strength as steadfast as it was silent. He faced life's challenges with quiet resilience, never burdening others with his struggles. Though he was stubborn as they come, Luke's determination was a driving force in his life. He never did anything halfway. His love of country and perseverance was matched only by his generosity and kindness, qualities that endeared him to all who crossed his path. He had unwavering devotion to his family and friends. As an active member of Servants of Christ Lutheran Church, Luke found a community that supported and cherished him as much as he did them.
A celebration of Luke's life will be held on July 18, 2026, at Servants of Christ Lutheran Church, located at 7650 Oaklandon Road. Family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by Luke's kindness and generosity are invited to join in honoring his memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be made to the family to be put into trust for his young daughters' future education.
While Luke's physical presence is no longer with us, his spirit and the love he gave freely to all will endure forever. May his soul find peace, and may his loved ones find comfort in the legacy of a life well-lived. As we say goodbye, we remember him with love and gratitude, cherishing the laughter, wisdom, and warmth he shared with the world. May his spirit continue to inspire us all to embrace life with the same zest and tenacity that he did.
