Loyse Jean Scott, 91, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on May 16, 1934, in Congleton, Kentucky to Leslie and Alberta Cooper. A devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, she dedicated her life to her family and the people she loved.
Known for her strength and quiet determination, Jean was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. Whether offering a listening ear or practical help, she was a constant source of support and comfort. Her strong faith, hard work and perseverance shaped not only her own life but inspired those who were fortunate enough to know her. Her favorite times were traveling with her sons, cooking for the holidays, having her grandchildren spend the night, and celebrating family birthdays. She lovingly cared for her own mother and sisters over the years, embodying compassion and selflessness in every act. Yet even in the busiest seasons of life, she never lost her sense of humor, filling her home with warmth, laughter, and love. Her legacy of love, resilience, and kindness will remain in the hearts of her family and all who knew her.
She is survived by her sons, Joel (Teresa) Proffitt and Chris (Stacy) Proffitt, both of Fishers, IN, grandchildren, Garrett (Megan) Proffitt of Williamsport, PA, Mason Proffitt of Dallas, TX, and Alexis Proffitt of Fishers, IN, great-grandchildren, Lena, Clara and Henry Proffitt of Williamsport, PA, brother, Steven (Pat) Edging of Indianapolis, IN, and many nieces and nephews, who will carry her memory forward with gratitude and pride.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie Cooper and Alberta Cooper Edging, her beloved sisters, Peggy Riggs and Freddie Malooley, and her nephew, Mike Riggs.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Jean’s honor on Friday, August 1, 2025, at Indiana Funeral Care, 8151 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m. with service beginning at 2:00 p.m.
She will be laid to rest at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
