Lonnie Cordell Shoopman, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home on October 24, 2025, at the age of 87. Born on January 8, 1938, in Burkesville, Kentucky, he lived a life rich in love, family, and contributions to his community.
Lonnie had a commendable career as a Dye Maker at Indianapolis General Motors Corp, where he was known for his dedication and skill. Beyond his professional achievements, he took immense pride in his cherished hobbies, which included fishing, gardening, singing, playing guitar, and engaging in creative engineering projects. These passions reflected his zest for life and his ability to find joy in both simple pleasures and complex creations.
A devoted family man, Lonnie proudly married Helen M. (Abney) Shoopman on February 7, 1959—a union that flourished for over six decades. Together, they raised two loving daughters, Pamela Mathes and Lisa Shoopman, who have continued to carry forward his legacy of kindness and strength. He was also a proud grandfather to Nick Mathes, Russ (Stephanie) Mathes , and Wesley Mathes, along with seven great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy and fulfillment.
Lonnie was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Exie (Taylor) Shoopman, and his sisters, Jewell Embry, Bobbie Spears, and Betty Shoopman. Their memories remained close to him, and they have left an indelible mark on his life.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be held at Indiana Funeral Care - Greenwood Chapel in Greenwood, Indiana, on October 29, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, followed by a funeral service at 12:30 PM. He will be laid to rest at Orchard Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis at 2:00 PM the same day.
Lonnie Cordell Shoopman will be remembered for his unwavering love, his gentle spirit, and the many lives he touched with kindness and laughter. He leaves behind a rich legacy that will endure through his family and friends.
