Lillian “Joan” Gibbs, age 94, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2026. Born on August 31, 1931, in Jonesville, Virginia, she was the daughter of Clyde and Veda Sexton and the oldest of eight children, growing up alongside one sister and six brothers.
Joan built a life rooted in devotion—to her family, her community, and the simple, meaningful acts of care that leave a lasting mark. She was a woman whose presence filled a room, known for her deep love of family and a laugh so rich, full, and infectious it could brighten even the heaviest of days.
She was preceded in death by her late husband, Ova Gibbs; her sister, Eleanor Garrett; her brothers, Grover Byrd Sexton, Franklin D. Sexton, James Blaine Sexton; and her great-grandson, Omarion Scott.
She was a longtime member of the Moose Lodge #540 and, in her earlier years, worked as a bartender at a couple local establishments, where her warm personality and quick wit made her a favorite among many. She also worked for the local Firestone during its heyday, a time she often reflected on with pride.
She is survived by her children, Debbie Scott, Terry Gibbs, and Mary Jane (Nick) Schippers; her grandchildren, Tosha Gibbs, Michael Scott, and April (Ryan) Jinks; her great-grandchildren, Logan Hefner, Isaac Jinks (Alli Jinks), Kaleb Hefner, Kenzie Jinks, Haley Jinks, Ashton Scott, and Cameron Jinks; her great-great-grandchildren, Desmond Jinks and Metztli Jinks; her brothers, Guy Clayton (Helen) Sexton, John Wayne (Mary Ann) Sexton, and Michael Winston (Anita) Sexton; and several very special and loved nieces and nephews.
Joan had a remarkable gift for knitting and crocheting, which she shared generously with others. For many years, she lovingly created baby sweater sets for newborns at Riverview Hospital, ensuring that countless families welcomed their little ones with warmth—both literal and heartfelt. Her hands were rarely still, and through every stitch, she left behind quiet acts of kindness that will continue to ripple through the community.
She will be remembered for her unwavering love, her strength, her creativity, and the joy she brought into the lives of those around her.
Her legacy lives on in the family she cherished, the lives she touched, and the warmth she so freely gave.
