Lawrence “Larry” Jay Schaps, 86, passed away on Tuesday September 16th at home with Ronda, his wife of over 60 years and the love of his life.

Larry loved and enjoyed life - he had a quick wit and a positive attitude even throughout his illness. He loved many things especially music, the ocean, ice cream, beer and shrimp and expounding about the intricacies of the previous or upcoming play. For years he exercised by walking miles around his neighborhood (or on the Gulf) usually wearing a bright neon t-shirt or tank and many times without a shirt at all. His tennis shoes were equally as brightly colored and he had many pairs.

His passion was his garden. At one time he had 42 different varieties of tomatoes. He gave himself the name “Ace” and would mysteriously drop off tomatoes to his friends, co-workers, his doctors, dentist and staff, the bank, his hairdresser and friends of friends!!

Larry was born in 1939 in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Marion Gruber Schaps and Milton Schaps. He became an Eagle Scout and spoke fondly of his days at Philmont Boy Scout Camp in New Mexico. He graduated from Middletown High School in 1959. When he attended his 50th reunion he had his barber etch a 59 into his hair. He attended the University of Miami in Ohio and was a member of DKE. He enlisted and served in the National Guard from 1962-68. Larry and Ronda raised their family in Indianapolis after moving there in the early 70’s.

Larry is survived by his wife Ronda and his two children Heather (Kevin) Waites and Eric (Lela) and two grandchildren Nick and Carleigh. Per his wishes no services will be held.
