Kim Kelly, affectionately known as “Heavy,” passed away peacefully on July 8, 2025, at the age of 63. He was born to Mildred Alexander (Jackson) and Fredrick Kelly on August 28, 1961, on a military base in Illinois.
Kim spent most of his life in Indianapolis, Indiana, though he also lived in Utah during part of his adult years. A man of resilience and determination, Kim worked hard to educate and elevate himself throughout his life.
In 1980, he attended the Dayton Job Corps Center, where he earned a Certificate of Achievement for Outstanding Performance as well as a Modern Basic Welding Course certificate. That same year, he received his Certificate of Training from the Atterbury Reserve Forces Training Area. In 1985, he obtained his GED from Crispus Attucks High School.
Driven by a passion for learning and service, Kim went on to earn several professional credentials. In 2005, he completed the ServSafe Certification and received a Certificate in Business, Management, and Finance. He also earned a Certificate of Culinary Competency from Second Helpings, Inc., and was a proud junior member of the American Culinary Federation—highlighting his deep love for the culinary arts.
Kim worked as an addictions counselor at Pathways, where he found his true calling. As a man in recovery himself, he dedicated his life to supporting others through their healing journeys with compassion, strength, and authenticity.
He will be remembered for his warmth, humor, and big-hearted nature. He loved cooking, especially at BBQs, and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He also had a passion for nice cars, stylish clothes, and jewelry that reflected his bold and vibrant personality.
Kim is survived by his stepfather, James Jackson; his brothers Dana Jackson, Darin Jackson, and Tony Adams; and a host of cousins, friends, and others he lovingly called family. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mildred Alexander (Jackson); his father, Fredrick Kelly; and his brothers, Patrick Kelly and Michael Jackson.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Indiana Funeral Care – Allisonville Road. A memorial service will follow from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. Family and friends are invited to the repast immediately afterward at Arsenal Park.
