Joseph Anthony Squires was born on January 9, 1949 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Charlie H. and Laverna I. Davis-Carter Squires, who preceded him in death. Joseph (Joe) was the fifth of five children born to Charlie & Laverna Squires.
Joseph attended Indianapolis Public Schools #9, #20, and Arsenal Technical High School. He received his GED.
Joseph accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Olivet Missionary Baptist Church. At his passing, he was a member of Mt Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, where, in 2017, he was voted ‘Father of the Year’.
Joseph served in the United States Army and completed his service with an Honorable Discharge in 1982. While in the Army, he received an Army Service Ribbon, an Overseas Service Ribbon, an Expert Badge with M16 Rifle Bar, and an Expert Badge with Hand Grenade Bar.
Joseph had been employed throughout his lifetime as a Welder, a Security Officer, and a Maintenance Technician. He was also skilled in masonry repair, specifically, tuckpointing.
Joseph loved attending concerts and parties, eating out at restaurants, attending family events, and any other event where he could be around people and have fun! He especially loved watching and listening to his talented family of singers and musicians at their music performances. He enjoyed all types of music and loved to ‘chair dance’. He would always be the person in the crowd with his hand in the air, waving it to the music. He loved attending events with his daughter, Marlena, along with many other friends and family, and wherever he went, he was always the “best dressed”. Joseph also loved to create canvas paintings and colorings that he would display on the walls at home.
Joseph was united in marriage to Mary Ann McCray Hambrite on June 20, 1998. He became the stepfather to Marlena Lynn Key. Mary Ann preceded Joseph in death on March 6, 2022, after a lengthy illness.
Joseph Anthony Squires departed this life at the age of 77 on Monday, March 9, 2026, after a lengthy illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie & Laverna Squires; brothers, Hilton Morgan, Morgan Morgan; sisters, Dimple Lawrence, Marion Jones, Philena Watts, Sara Davis, Joyce Thurman, and Cecilia Barnes.
Joseph leaves to cherish his memory a brother, Reverend Phillip V. Squires, Sr; daughters, Marlena Lynn Key, and Tameka Joanne Squires; sons, Shajuan Romok Squires and Kalum Tristian Squires, Sr.; grandchildren, Shayuan Squires, Matthew Jackson, Kalum Tristian Squires, Jr., Daneka Evon Finney, Mya Latrice Finney, and Saniyah Mae Squires; great-grandchildren, Marley Ray Mahan, Aubryee LM Jackson, Jaiceon Williams, Kahlil Messiah Stewart, and Khy’ro Josiah Stewart; Special Great Niece, Tisara Hardy, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
