John Elwood Wasson, 94, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on January 22nd, 2026 after a short illness. He was born on July 17th, 1931 in Wayne County, Ohio, the son of George Beall Wasson and Edith Patterson Wasson. He grew up on a farm near Wooster, Ohio and was a 1950 graduate of Chester High School. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1955-1959. He married Bessie Loretta “Lori” Shortt on June 7th, 1958 and they were married for over 63 wonderful years until her passing in October of 2021. His parents and his brother, George Richard “Dick” (Janice) Wasson also preceded him in death. He is survived by two loving sons John Michael (Sheila) Wasson of Carmel, Indiana, and George Mitchell (Jenny) Wasson of Greenville, Indiana. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Kayla Gonzales, Andrew (Eiríka) Gonzales, Matthew Wasson, Kathryn Wasson, and Brianne Wasson, as well as one great-grandson, Hendrix Gonzales. Also surviving him are several nieces, nephews, cousins, and several special friends including Jeff Rubenstein, and Duane & Judy Baggerly. John's career was primarily in the propane industry, working as a manager for Pyrofax Gas, Texas Eastern, and Bergquist. Beginning in 2003, John and Lori enjoyed spending the cold seasons at their winter home in Sebring, Florida until he decided to come back to Indianapolis full-time in late 2024. His family immensely enjoyed getting to spend those last few holidays with him. John was an avid golfer and was a member of the Golf Club of Indiana along with Lori for several decades. He hit three hole-in-ones, all at GCI, the most recent of which was only a few years ago. John stayed active even in retirement, with many activities, working part-time at Pinecrest Golf Club in Avon Park, Florida, during the winter months. John was a long-time member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Indianapolis and later became a member of his son George’s church, Faithpoint Church in Floyds Knobs, which he made a 2+ hour drive to attend biweekly. He enjoyed his Saturday morning breakfasts with his son John, his trips “down south” to see his son George and family, his phone calls and visits with his grandson Matthew, and spending quality time with his other grandkids, such as attending school events, having cookouts, and more. He was a sports fan, and enjoyed watching golf, Indiana teams, and INDYCAR racing, his favorite driver being Scott Dixon. He will be remembered fondly for his generous love of family and friends, his sense of humor, his warm and outgoing personality, his immense dedication, loyalty, and work ethic, and his strong faith. He will be interred at the Crown Hill National Cemetery Annex in Indianapolis. In lieu of a funeral, there will be a celebration of John’s life on March 21, 2026 at Faithpoint Church in Floyds Knobs, IN. Visitation will be from 1:00 - 3:00 pm with the celebration of John's life at 3:00 pm.
