John Stevens, 89, passed away on August 17, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, family, friendship, wisdom, and humor.
Born June 10, 1937, in Mecca, Indiana, to Marguerite and Henry “Dutch” Stevens, John was one of three children. He is survived by his sister, June of Petersburg, Indiana; his brother, Joe, preceded him in death. John graduated from Mecca High School in 1955, where he met his lifelong love and companion, Gloria Graham. They married September 2, 1960.
John blessed R. R. Donnelly and Son with his wit, intellect, and common sense for 35 years. After retirement, he shared those same qualities with Hoosier Homes and Holiday Inn. He also served several years in the National Guard, where he shot big guns and hung out with manly men.
John and Gloria attended college, ate a lot of vegetable soup, and began raising their family in Crawfordsville. Their children are Stephanie Berghoff (Jerry), Greg Stevens, and Melissa Harnish. John was blessed with nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, who brought him great joy. He generously shared his help and humor with in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, and a phalanx of friends.
As a young father, John came to faith in Jesus, and his trust in Him profoundly impacted his family. He served God both within the church and beyond its walls, setting an example of faith to be modeled and followed.
The warmth of his smile and twinkle in his blue eyes will be deeply missed. Though his final years were difficult, John remained optimistic, offering his own brand of humor and wisdom. John’s legacy will continue through what he valued most: his family. We believe this world is less without him, but look forward to seeing him again—pain-free, whole, and fishing in heaven.
Visitation will be Saturday, August 22, at 2:00 p.m., followed by a 3:00 p.m. service at Calvary Chapel Crawfordsville, 915 Whitlock Avenue. Memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Chapel or the family.
