June 5, 1959 — May 1, 2024

Indianapolis

John Michael 'Mike' Lyon, 64, of Indianapolis, IN passed away unexpectedly on May 1, 2024.

Mike was born in Moline, IL, but spent the beginning of his life in South Bend, IN. During his childhood, Mike's father was the Director of Maintenance for the University of Notre Dame.

Hearing the roar of the football stadium on weekends in the fall led to Mike's unending love for the Fighting Irish.

After graduating from Saint Joseph's High School in 1977, Mike attended and completed his bachelor's degree from Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). While at IUPUI, Mike worked as the sports announcer for the basketball team, the Metros.

Mike was the proud father of Nicholas Lyon (27, of Mooresville, IN) to whom he passed on his love and dedication to the Chicago Blackhawks, golf, and the Cubbies. He often told everyone he knew that his greatest accomplishment in life was his son.

Mike is also survived by his longtime friend, Carol Catanzarite, whom he was living with at the time of his death.

Mike was preceded in death by both of his parents, Edwin and Patricia as well as 3 siblings, David, Jerome, and Thomas.

Mike is survived by his son, Nicholas Lyon; 7 siblings, Katie (Jim), Lucy (Steve), Francie, Mary, Molly (Curt), Julie, and Jim (Debi) as well as several nieces and nephews.

No formal funeral service will be scheduled, however, an informal celebration of life will be held at a later date. Mike's ashes are to be buried in the family plot alongside his parents, Edwin and Patricia Lyon.

Memories of Mike will continue to be cherished and shared, much like the stories he loved to share with others. He will be deeply missed.
