Phil Carney

Phil Carney, 80, passed away on September 20, 2026. He was a self-described computer geek, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.

Phil grew up in LaGrange, Indiana, and graduated from LaGrange High School. He briefly attended Kalamazoo College before the Vietnam War, when he enlisted in the United States Air Force and served as an interpreter.

After the war, Phil attended Indiana University in Bloomington, earning his bachelor’s degree in physics. It was there, at Nick’s bar, that he met the love of his life, Rosie. Phil was also a talented musician and will be remembered for the jazz piano pieces he learned during High School and his time in the service.

Phil and Rosie eventually settled in Brownsburg, where they raised their three children — Sheila (Joseph), Bill (Cole), and Bob (Vicki). Their home was lively and full of kids, pets, laughter, and music. As the children grew up and moved out, the house became quieter, but never lost its warmth.

Phil loved nature and spent many family trips camping and hiking in state and national parks. Later in life, he proudly had his yard certified as a wildlife habitat. He also adored animals and cared for many dogs, cats, and fish throughout his life. He also enjoyed playing Dungeons and Dragons with a close group of friends for many years.

Phil is survived by his wife, Rosie; daughter, Sheila; sons, Bill and Bob; and grandchildren Hayden, Rylie, Sam, James, Johnathan, Thomas, and Mary.

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 5th from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 pm at Indiana Funeral Care, Greenwood Chapel, 2433 E. Main Street, Greenwood, IN 46143.

Burial will be held on Tuesday, October 6th at 11:00 am at Crown Hill National Cemetery Annex, 725 W. 42nd Street, Indianapolis, IN 46208.
