Jessie M. Stewart, a cherished member of the Indianapolis community and devoted matriarch, peacefully passed away on June 5, 2026, at the remarkable age of 99. Born on March 19, 1927, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Jessie’s long and vibrant life was marked by steadfast commitment to her family, her faith, and her community.
A proud member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Jessie’s spiritual devotion was an enduring cornerstone throughout her life. Beyond her faith, she was an active participant in the American Legion, reflecting her deep respect for service and community involvement. Known to many as an avid bowler, Jessie’s passion for the sport continued well into her eighties, showcasing her spirited and lively nature.
Jessie is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Karen Moore, and her grandson, Stephen L. (Aislinn) Lowery. Her legacy further lives on through her great-grandchildren—Joshua (Ashley) Schilling, Corey (Kaija) Lowery, Jessica (Alvis) Mills, Joshua (Leah) Lowery, and Stephen T. Lowery—and an ever-growing family of great-great-grandchildren, including Anthony Clemons, Kaden Clemons, Maci Lowery, Damien Warren, Lily Schilling, Bryant Lowery, Archer Schilling, Silas Lowery, and Lucas Lowery. Their presence continues to honor the love and strength Jessie shared with them throughout her life.
She is predeceased by her father, Scott Phelps, and mother, Nellie (Beck) Phelps, as well as by her son, Carl Stewart, and grandson, Michael Lowery. Jessie also lost her brother and sister: Harry Beck and Elizabeth "Betty" Duhamell. Her two husbands, Ivan B. Gillham and Charles Stewart, also preceded her in death.
The family will gather to celebrate Jessie’s remarkable journey at St. Patrick Catholic Church, located at 950 Prospect Street, Indianapolis, IN 46203. Visitation will be held on June 16, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed immediately by the funeral service from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. A final tribute will take place at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, 1977 S State Road 135, Greenwood, IN 46143, with a graveside service beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Throughout her lengthy life, Jessie M. Stewart exemplified grace, dedication, and love. Her memory will endure in the hearts of her family, friends, and all who were privileged to know her. She was truly called home after a full and meaningful life, leaving behind a legacy that will inspire generations to come.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Humane Society of Hamilton County in Jessie's honor.
