Jane Ellen Haltom, a deeply loved wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, and friend, went home to be with the Lord on July 22, 2025, just days before her 75th birthday. She passed peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family in Morgantown, Indiana. Jane’s life was a beautiful reflection of grace, kindness, and service.
She was the cherished wife of Douglas Haltom for 54 years, a devoted mother to Laurie Hummel (Mike), Jennifer Friesen (James), Katherine Freeland-Moran (Tom), and Amy Hyman (Chris), and a proud and loving grandmother to thirteen grandchildren: Kaleigh Van Dam (Adam), Andrew Friesen (Faith), Gracie Friesen, Jake Freeland, Sophie Freeland, Hannah Angebrandt (Noah), Bella Hummel, Bella Hyman, Will Hyman, Noah Hyman, Kiersten Moran, Keeley Moran, and Joey Moran. She also adored her first great granddaughter, Lillian. Jane had a special way with children — not only within her family but also in every classroom and community she touched.
With a degree in Elementary Education from Sterling College, she spent many years nurturing young minds as a teacher, reading specialist, and mentor to English language learners. Her gentle encouragement and unwavering belief in each child’s potential left a lasting impact. Music was another of Jane’s many gifts. She played both piano and violin and brought beauty and comfort through her music. Her heart for serving others was boundless — whether preparing meals, visiting someone who needed a listening ear, creating opportunities for parents to learn English, or counseling at camps for children in need.
She was also a faithful supporter of global missions, serving alongside organizations like Wheeler Mission, One Mission Society, and Wycliffe Bible Translators. A woman of deep faith, Jane was an active member of Center Grove Church, where she quietly and consistently lived out her love for Jesus. She had a gift for hospitality, welcoming others into her home — and her heart — with joy, warmth, and often a touch of humor. She made people feel seen, known, and loved. Jane shared an especially close bond with her sister and best friend, Marjorie Wright of Phoenix, Arizona. Though miles apart, their connection was unshakable — filled with laughter, adventures, and deep sisterly love.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Children’s Ministries at Center Grove Church or to Children’s and Women’s Ministries at Wheeler Mission, honoring Jane’s lifelong passion for helping others.
