Ida Swenby
1939 - 2025
Ida Marie “Edie” Swenby (née Qualitza), age 85, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2025, in New Castle, Indiana. Born on December 29, 1939, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Edie lived a life marked by love, devotion to family, and quiet joys that brought comfort to those around her.
Edie was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy, where she laid the foundation for a life centered on compassion and care. She carried these values into every role she embraced throughout her life—most especially as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.
For the past 44 years, Edie shared her life with her beloved husband David Swenby. Together they built a home filled with warmth and laughter. Her legacy continues through her children: Connie Robinson (Kevin), Kerrie Donoho (John Paugh), Heather Longardner (Derek Rudd), and Christopher Swenby (Jenn). She also leaves behind her cherished sister Sandy Ferguson (Dan), who remained a close companion throughout her life.
Edie was the proud grandmother of Zachary Rogers (Audrey), Tyler Rogers (Jessica), Sam Cook, Autumn Cook, Richie Cook (Chrissy), Maxwell Cook, Danielle Perry (Alex), Demetria Spivey (Kevin), Samantha Swenby, Lucas Swenby, Addison Swenby, Hailey Longardner, and Ronin Rudd. Her love extended across generations to include 20 great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren. Though one great-granddaughter, Paityn Rogers, preceded her in death, Edie's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Her extended family included brother-in-law John Swenby (Aimee) and sisters in-law Vicki Smith and Libby Swenby Pinkepank (Bill). She also held dear many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who became like family over the years.
Edie was preceded in death by her parents Vera Ida Qualitza and Albert Stephen Qualitza; her sister MaryAnn Davis and brother-in-law Lauren Davis; father-in-law Vearl Swenby; mother-in-law Jean Swenby; brother-in-law David Smith; and beloved great-granddaughter Paityn Rogers.
Known for her gentle spirit and generous heart, Edie found joy in simple pleasures. She loved tending to her garden—nurturing flowers with the same care she gave to those around her. Coloring and puzzles were among her favorite pastimes—quiet activities that reflected her thoughtful nature and attention to detail.
Above all else, Edie was a loving mother whose kindness touched everyone she met. Her presence brought comfort; her smile offered reassurance; and her unwavering support created a sense of belonging for all who entered her life.
May the memory of Ida “Edie” Swenby bring peace to those who mourn her passing and joy to those who celebrate the beautiful legacy she leaves behind.
A memorial service will be planned at a future date.
