Helen Louise Chastain, a beloved matriarch, departed this world peacefully on September 29, 2025, in Avon, Indiana, at the age of 94. Born on November 14, 1930, in Indianapolis, Indiana, she lived a life full of love, dedication, and meaningful connections.
Helen's formative years were spent in the vibrant city of Indianapolis, where she attended School #21 and later graduated from Arsenal Technical High School. With a strong work ethic, she devoted herself to her career at American States Insurance, ultimately becoming a respected Mailroom Supervisor before her retirement.
The cornerstone of Helen's life was her deep love for her husband, Morris Robert Chastain. They celebrated their marriage on November 18, 1949, and together they cherished nearly 65 joyful years until Morris's passing on August 2, 2014. Their bond was a testament to enduring love—a partnership filled with adventures, laughter, and countless cherished memories.
Helen took great joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved playing Euchre and Bingo, always enthusiastic about gathering friends and family around for fun and friendly competition. Her passion for genealogy brought her immense satisfaction as she spent hours tracing her family roots. Camping and traveling were favorite pastimes for Helen and Morris, who embraced every opportunity to explore new places together. She also delighted in crafting, particularly making beautiful macramé creations, a skill that showcased her creativity and keen eye for detail.
Helen leaves behind her loving family, including her children: Sandy Burkley (Ed), Terri Morrison (Peter), Mark Chastain (Leslie), Mike Chastain (Susan), and Paula Meyer. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Todd Burkley, Jim Morrison, Brandy Williams, Dakota Chastain, Jacob Moon, Sean Fortier, Jessica Fortier, Sloan Fortier, Scott Matthias, and Curtis Matthias, along with Alex Matthias. In addition, she was blessed with eleven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who will forever carry her spirit in their hearts.
In her passing, Helen is preceded by those who were dear to her: her husband, Morris Chastain; her parents, Bert and Leafy Todd; siblings Robert Todd, Betty Todd, JoAnn Altop, and Nancy Ludlow; as well as her precious grandchildren, Caleb Worth and Zoren Matthias.
Helen Louise Chastain will be forever remembered as a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend whose kindness, warmth, and laughter touched all who were fortunate enough to know her. Though she has now reunited with her beloved Morris and other family members in eternity, her legacy of love and joy lives on in the hearts of her family.
