Harriett Gertrude "Gertie" Hacker, 93, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 5, 2026, at Rosegate Village in Indianapolis, surrounded by those who loved her.
Born on May 10, 1933, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Gertie was the daughter of Daniel Marquis Crumrine and Harriett Lyla (Stewart) Crumrine. She graduated from Beech Grove High School with the Class of 1952 and later completed two years of secretary school. She went on to enjoy a successful career in the insurance industry, retiring from American States Insurance after 30 years of dedicated service.
Gertie never met a stranger. She was a true social butterfly whose warmth, kindness, and wisdom touched everyone fortunate enough to know her. She had an incredible gift for making people feel seen, heard, and encouraged. Whether you were family, a lifelong friend, or someone she had just met, Gertie always found a way to brighten your day.
She loved gathering friends and family around the table for card games and fellowship, creating countless cherished memories in her home. Her love of games continued throughout her life, and while living at Rosegate Village she organized weekly game gatherings, bringing residents together through cards, dominoes, and Rummikub.
At Rosegate, Gertie's room became much more than a place to live—it became a place of comfort. Staff and fellow residents often stopped by seeking advice, encouragement, or simply a friendly conversation. Her door was always open, and her compassionate spirit made everyone who entered leave feeling a little lighter.
One of Gertie's greatest joys was sending handwritten letters, notes, and greeting cards. She delighted in including newspaper clippings of jokes and uplifting messages, always hoping to bring a smile to someone's face. Even those she barely knew were often recipients of her thoughtful words of encouragement. Her kindness lived on in every note she wrote, leaving lasting impressions on countless hearts.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel Marquis Crumrine and Harriett Lyla (Stewart) Crumrine; her brother, Chester Crumrine; her sister, Leora Laubaugh; her first husband, Donald Malone; her second husband, Jarvis Hacker; her son, Rory Malone; and her son-in-law, David Trackwell.
Gertie is lovingly survived by her daughter, Sharon Trackwell of Indianapolis; her son, Garrett Malone of Martinsville; her grandchildren, Jason Malone of Greenwood, Jennifer Beasley of Greenwood, Kara Burgin of Greenwood, Amanda Cox of Martinsville, Jessica Wesseler of Martinsville, and Megan Mattila of Hastings, Minnesota; along with several beloved great-grandchildren, extended family members, and many dear friends.
Gertie's legacy is one of kindness, generosity, encouragement, and unwavering friendship. She leaves behind a reminder to always make time for others, offer a listening ear, share a kind word, and keep the door open for those who need it most.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rosegate Village in memory of Gertie Hacker and mailed to 7510 Rosegate Drive, Indianapolis, IN 46237.
In accordance with Gertie's wishes, no funeral services will be held. She will be laid to rest at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida, where she will be interred alongside her husband.
