Gregory William Chalfin

Gregory William Chalfin, 52, of Indianapolis passed away on September 18th, 2026, in the comfort of his home.

Greg was a devoted son, husband and father. Family was the center of his life. He was fiercely independent but also had a huge heart. He was a practical joker who might start indoor water fights one day and remodel the kitchen the next. He loved any project that allowed him to work with his hands.

Greg was originally from Wabash, Indiana. He grew up playing all manners of sports but excelled at basketball, his first love. He graduated from Southwood High School and went on to study at Purdue University. His career would take him from computer programming to chainsaw carving to managing grocery stores. Through it all, he loved working with people.

He was an avid sports fan always supporting the Big 10, especially football. Fall weekends were filled with football games. He was also a lifelong Miami Dolphins fan. He could be heard every weekend verbally sparring with his dad about what was going to happen in the Notre Dame game. When sports weren’t keeping him busy, he had an endless supply of home improvement projects that he loved to tackle. He did everything from building furniture to remodeling the kitchen. Life with Greg was never a dull moment.

Greg is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Jonathan, Brooklyn and Ray; his stepsons, Elijah and Micah; his granddaughter, Renesmee; and his dog Oliver. He is also survived by his parents, Bill and Judy; brothers Sean and Brian (Janet); nephews Brady and Tanner; and countless aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Gretchen, and his grandparents.

Greg spent the last eight years of his life battling stage IV colorectal cancer. He tirelessly faced treatments, hospital stays and visits to the emergency room in order to remain healthy enough to enjoy family vacations and the occasional weekend getaway. Greg fought extraordinarily hard to remain with the people that he loved. After fighting for so long, Greg is finally at peace and free from pain. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
