Gerald Lynn Russell

Gerald L. Russell, lovingly known to family and friends as “J.R.,” passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026, at the age of 85.

Born on August 10, 1940, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late Harry and Florence Russell, J.R. graduated from Howe High School in 1959.

After graduating, J.R. proudly served in the United States Navy from 1959 to 1963. Serving his country was one of the greatest honors of his life. He often shared stories from his Navy days, and those stories became treasured memories for his family. His patriotism and pride in his military service never faded. He especially cherished the unique bond he shared with his grandson-in-law, Keegan Crowder, whose service in the United States Marine Corps gave them a deep mutual respect and countless military stories to share.

Following his military service, J.R. dedicated 30 years to General Motors before retiring. On April 2, 1977, he married Helen (Morris) Russell, the love of his life. His world revolved around Helen, and theirs was a love that was evident to everyone who knew them. Together they spent 49 wonderful years building a life centered on faith, family, and one another.

J.R. was a member of the Christian Church and was known for his quiet strength, his strong work ethic, and his kind heart. He loved telling stories about his years in the Navy, listening to all types of music—especially with Helen—and cheering on his beloved Indianapolis Colts, with a special appreciation for the Peyton Manning years. Above all, nothing brought J.R. more joy than spending time with his family. He cherished every moment spent with them, and his love for them was evident in everything he did.

J.R. is survived by his loving wife, Helen Russell; his daughter, Kim Russell, and her daughters, Eliot Stevens and Nolan Stevens; his daughter, Jodi Russell-Smith, and her husband, Jeff Smith, and their sons, Brycen Smith and Brayden Smith; his daughter, Tara Andre, and her husband, John Andre, and their daughters, Scarlet Andrzejczak and Sophie Andre-Crowder, and Sophie’s husband, Keegan Crowder. He is also survived by his sister, Sharon Rodgers, and his nephew, Brian Kellermeyer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Florence Russell, and his sisters, Pat and Sally.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 23, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Indiana Funeral Care in Greenwood, Indiana. Burial will follow immediately at 1:30 pm at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Greenwood, Indiana, with full military honors provided by the United States Navy.
