Evelyn Bicksler

March 28, 1930 — January 14, 2025

Avon

Evelyn Spurling Bicksler was born March 28, 1930 to Rev Lyle & Doris Brock, in the basement of a Kansas Free Methodist church. Rev Brock moved the family to the California San Joaquin Valley where they planted several FM churches.

In 1951, Evelyn earned her nursing degree from Samuel Merritt Hospital School of Nursing and married Rev Jim Spurling in 1951. Their first church was in Tonasket, WA, where children Wes and Connie were born. They then moved to Wilmore, KY where Katherine was born and Jim graduated from Asbury Seminary.

They then served on a missionary team in Butuan City, Philippines to build the FM church and Light and Life Bible College, as well as the Bancasi missionary facility. They welcomed their fourth child, David.

The family moved to Winona Lake, IN, where Jim oversaw missionary candidates and Evelyn returned to nursing. The Spurlings served churches in Spokane, Seattle, Yakima and Sedro-Woolley, WA, Urbana, IL, and again in the Philippines.

After Jim’s passing Evelyn married Bill Bicksler and served with him at China Evangelical Seminary in Taiwan. They retired in 2003 and lived in Indianapolis, where Bill passed away in 2023.

Evelyn passed away on January 14, 2025, surrounded by her friends and family. She leaves 4 children, Wes Spurling and wife Pamela, Connie Tafoya and husband Ernie, Katherine Keaney and husband Jim, Dave Spurling and wife Debbie, 18 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. She is preceded In death by first husband of 49 years, Jim, second husband of 22 years Bill, and grandchildren Dane Lyle Keaney, and Kasie Hernandez.

Evelyn fiercely loved all of her Spurling and Bicksler family members. Her infectious giggles were often heard during raucous family game nights. Over her 94 years she passionately served the Lord with an adventurous spirit, living in multiple countries and cities, moving too many times to count.

Memorial services will be held in Indianapolis on January 19, 2025, at John Wesley Free Methodist Church, 5900 W. 46th St. Indianapolis, IN 46254 after church, and in Sedro-Woolley (date TBD). In lieu of flowers, donations are being accepted to support the Butuan Light and Life Bible College.
