Eric Norman McVey, age 74, a lifelong resident of Shelbyville, passed away on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at Saint Francis Hospital in Indianapolis.
Eric was born on December 10, 1951, in Shelbyville, Indiana, to Norman McVey and Mavern McVey Chambers (Courtney).
Eric was a hardworking man who spent his life working with his hands. For many years, he built houses and apartments, taking pride in honest, physical work. Later, he transitioned into the pool industry, where he specialized in concrete work and pool construction. In recent years, his son, Eric Jr., joined the industry, starting his own business, continuing a legacy of craftsmanship and dedication.
Eric was strong in his Christian faith, a faith that guided him throughout his life. On the day of his passing, he reaffirmed his faith with his pastor—an act that deeply reflected the foundation of his beliefs.
He loved being outdoors, especially fishing and hunting, and found great joy in caring for his dogs, whom he lovingly tended to until his final week. If you happened to catch Eric inside, he would be watching an old Western or IU sports. They were his favorite!
Above all else, Eric cherished being a dad and a Papaw. He was immensely proud of his grandchildren and treasured the opportunity to watch his grandson Maverick grow during his first year of life while living in the same household. The two were best buddies. Eric affectionately nicknamed Maverick “Boogie” shortly after he was born. A name that has lovingly stuck.
If you knew Eric, you knew his big, loud, booming voice. A voice strong enough to wake a hibernating bear. You also knew that he would be the first to tell you when you were wrong, and just as quickly, the first to have your back. He loved his family fiercely and made that love known every single day.
Eric is survived by his two children, Courtney Hensley (Oldham) and Eric N. McVey Jr. (Amber McVey); his grandchildren, Alexsis Bennett , Derek Foster, MacKenzie Bennett, Maverick McVey; a grandson on the way, Wesley Eric McVey, expected in April and his sister LouAnn Kremer (McVey) along with many other family members and long time friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Norman McVey and Mavern Chambers and his sister Judy Vaughn.
Eric will be cremated, and a celebration of life will be held this spring, with details to be announced at a later date. The family plans for the gathering to be held outdoors, a fitting tribute to a man who loved being outside.
Eric will be deeply and sorely missed by all who knew and loved
